So I was watching the unveiling of the Mk8 Golf R the other day, a car that on "paper" (screen) never looked attractive to me (loved the 7.5 Golf R as well as Cupra 5F). This didn't improve much after the full release of the car but what really drew my attention was the upgraded AWD system with an additional torque vectoring system at the rear axle based on a multi-plate clutch diff. This sounds very similar to the systems used by the Focus RS and the A45S so it seems as the new model should drive much better than the last.

Now, I still am not a big fun of the looks as I said, neither inside or outside and I find the mk4 Cupra a much nicer and more aggressive offering. However, is there any word on whether it will also feature the same torque vectoring system at the rear axle? Because if not, it will mean that there is more between the Golf R and the Cupra than just the brand name, making the choice of the Cupra a tougher one especially for whoever considers driving a top priority.

I haven't heard/read anything about such a system when the new Cupra was launched some months back but what leaves me with some hope is that in reality, we've only seen the PHEV 242 hatch in the flesh which is not the full-cream CUPRA. No real info on the 4Drive estate yet (apart from exterior photos) so could it be that SEAT was delaying to talk about this new tech in detail until the Mk8 Golf R was presented? Meaning the torque vectoring would also make it on the 4Drive estate? Or is it just wishful thinking...?

A Cupra 4Drive estate with the tech shown on the new Golf R (and the Brembo brakes on the Cupra) would make it my perfect next car...

Also, when are we expected to see the full release of the 310 AWD estate in Europe? It's strange it's taking so much time since the hatch was presented.

Hi - from the CUPRA Leon press release...

In the most powerful estate variant the performance is controlled by the 4Drive all-wheel drive
system. The latest generation of the electro-hydraulic multi-disc traction system delivers power to all
four wheels (whichever has the most traction) in a controlled manner to maximise traction and
performance.
The 4Drive traction system analyses road conditions in real time, including the speed of the car, the
speed of each wheel, the steering wheel position, and the driving style or mode to quickly and
progressively deliver power instantly to the necessary wheels. Torque can even be controlled
between wheels on either side of the vehicle thanks to the EDS electronic aid which locks the
slipping wheel, meaning no transversal torque is lost.
The system is integrated into the rear axle and sits at the end of the drive shaft in front of the rear
differential, improving weight distribution, meaning the new CUPRA Leon is dynamic, assured and
composed.
