I did my engineering degree dissertation on aerodynamics design, specifically with design to the diffuser area of a race car. Without an undertray on the vehicle, the diffuser at the rear will do little more than change the aesthetics. The diffuser is part of the whole system starting under the car and leading out to the open air at the back. A properly designed diffuser actually starts around the middle of the car, and its as it begins to diverge downforce is created at this point. If you were able to flatten out the underbody of the car and lead it into the diffuser at the rear, it will create some downforce, but a curved piece of plastic won't...

Here's a different look at this.... I noticed a big difference when I set my suspension up with a wedge type rake, by this I don't mean the use of garden tools!!! Lol I lowered the front more than the back with an aggressive rake type stance and it felt much much more planted and less light as you say steering wise at over 60+ mph (80-120) lol on a track tho of course!! I suppose this was due to it having less air passing underneath but also putting an aerodynamic angle pushing the front of the car down it seems to be an improvement, all the touring cars have aggressive rakes too!
