Hi all,

Im fairly new here but have a question.

I put my 2004 LCR in for an MOT today and its failed on both wishbones.

Ordered in new ones and they didnt fit properly on the ball joints...?

On further inspection it seems the Cupra R has different ones.

Now the garage i went too, said the price is £120 inc VAT for each wishbone, so £240 the pair plus fitting :( The other ones were £28... is this right?

Do i need new ones, or is there another way around this?

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks ;)

id personally say. dont bother getting them cheap things.
i did 3 cars last year, using these cheaper type. one even had fai on, the fai ones were better, but in around 6/9 months, the bushes were perished. id still to proper vw type mate, you'll get your use out of them.

id also do them your self. they aint hard to do

There are no cheap LCR wishbones except second hand, the £28 ones are for the LC, as Tim said it will be the bushes that have failed and are under £30 each, do NOT buy new wishbones, if the garage say you need to ask them why.

The LC has the mk4 golf setup up front where the droplink attaches to the wishbone
The LCR has TT/S3 seup where droplinks attach to strut
They are different sizes and require different bushes so wouldn't fit
All part numbers and prices (from Sere motors) are in the guide

with the amount of wish bone i end up changing. im going to invest in a press.
at the min, its cheaper to just change the wishbone as a whole. but if you have apress, it will save.

still, thanks to this thread, i see they are both differnt, the cupra & the r. looking over the net, many sites state they are the same wishbones.

Just to complete all statements:
The LCR hast cast control arms (like TT 8N, S3 8L with BAM engines) whereas the other Golf 4 platform cars have pressed steel arms.

you sure that the R32 dont have the cast wishbones?
as i know all TT 8n has the cast wishbones not only the BAM engine. and i think all S3 engines APY, AMK, BAM has the same cast wishbones.

Yes, you're right Golf 4 R32 models also have the same wishbones. However I'm not sure whether APY models have cast arms.

Does anyone know if it is possible to fit the cast wishbones to replace the pressed ones if you also change the drop links and ball joints...? Is it that straight forward?

yes it is, i have done it, you will need LCR or S3 hubs, you need to be careful with the hubs as there are two types of drive shaft, one bolt and the other's a nut, the early LCR's had the nut the later ones a hex bolt, check what drive shafts you have as far as i know the LC has the nut (mine does) you also need (as you Know) wishbones, lower ball joints, the upper ball joints (track rod ends) are on upside down on the LCR i changed the steering arms and track rod ends (for LCR)but you can just swap the LH one for the RH and keep the LC steering arms, but as they where not that expensive i changed them, you will also need to change the ARB as you will loose the mounting point on the wishbone but the R32 ARB kit is (Was) under £100 you will then only need the drop links, if you need any help or info on this let me know.
