I wished I lived in England, your tax is a lot cheaper than over here in Ireland.
I'm paying €710 a year for a 150 fr tdi, and our roads are twice as bad as English roads, what a rip off. Think a cupra is around €650 for the year. No wonder there are so many poverty spec cars over here.

best thing you can do is buy a old tax exempt corvette with a gas guzzling 7 litre v8 worn piston ring oil burning monster the money you save on tax pays the fuel...

then they have you on tax for fuel, so really your foooked!

Except that Road Tax was abolished in 1937, and since then you pay for the maintenance of the roads from your council tax, and 'general' taxation from central coffers

Now you pay Vehicle Excise Duty, which is a tax to own/put a car on the road based on emissions (or engine size)

So if you want to moan about people using the roads & not paying for them - start with students, people lying about the number of people living in a household to get single occupancy council tax, self employed people abusing the system to minimise their tax liability etc etc

Colloquially it's referred to as 'road tax' or 'car tax'.

The DVLA's own radio adverts call it road tax.
