The gearbox on my 2004 Cupra TDi has started to make a whining noise.

I have not noticed any oil loss.

Any ideas?

its Shot? Just had my 6 spd box replaced due to constant whining under acceleration which gradually got worse, box oil was full of metal filings :(

Deep joy!
Any suggestions which way to go, recon, new, rebuild?
Any recommendations?

Indeed! My vag specialist recommended a 2nd hand known good box with warranty rather than recon which was £1200 new was £2000 the 2nd hand was £400ish and warranted!

Cheers, oil may have been a solution, but it looks like it is the diff bearings that have gone. Booked in tomorrow. Been advised that a rebuild of the 'box may be possible.

May as well have the clutch and flywheel done at the same time.

No single mass flywheel available I am being told so mega bucks dual mass one to add to the grief:cry:

You can guess what my Christmas present is this year:lol:

It's heartbreaking isn't it! I know exactly how you feel mate hope it gets sorted (fairly) cheaply for you pal!

As a guide I paid £370+vat for oem DMF and flywheel, £460+vat for a box and then around 5-6 hours labour I think!

I wanted up rated clutch and fly but could no way afford once the box was buggered :(

Yeah deeply p!ssed off, but hey ho!
The price I have been quoted was around £440 incl VAT for the DMF and clutch and I am just holding my breath on the 'box and 'diff.
Bit like you if I had some more cash I would have have gone for an LSD. Maybe next time....

Got the report back from the gearbox man...
One tooth broken from the crown wheel which clattered around and damaged 5th & 6th.

Does beg the question... Is this an engineering issue? Never had a diff break before and I am running the car stock so should be engineered to deal with the torque.

So...
£550 + VAT later....
Still cheaper than a recon 'box or a new one, and no worries about the history of a secondhand 'box either.

So far can't fault the service of my local specialist.
