How many of you would have preferred the Golf R MK 7 to the Cupra 280?

Just a question as 2 people I know said they actually prefer my 280 to their Golf R

When I ordered my Cupra, the choice was between the Cupra and a S3 Sportback (basically the same as a Golf R) . I went with the best deal at the time.

I never looked at a Golf R to be honest. I probably could have got one for less a month than my Cupra thanks to strong residuals at the time and cheap lease deals. It is a cracking car though but I actually prefer the Mk6 Golf R.

Looking back 14 months later I don't regret it as there are a LOT of Mk7 R's in Lincoln, particularly in the colour I would have got. I know of 2 other Cupras in the Lincoln area.

Yes I miss the traction of 4 wheel drive, though didn't go for the Golf because there are so many around and I just liked the aesthetics of the ST Cupra in red, so bought the car purely on looks, what am I like??!? Well when it got great write-ups, fastest estate car round the ring etc etc then I got more interested.

Then the killer crunch was the money side, over £6k off list via a broker, 0% credit, free servicing, then I just had to have the ST Cupra though quietly sometimes I do regret not getting a Golf, I couldn't really justify the additional cost.

I wanted golf r estate but the poor finance deals and extra cash for options that were standard on cupra meant the cupra won the day.

The benefit is it will be a lot less common than the golf and I have about 5k in my pocket.

If you spec an golf r up to have the goodies the Leon has you are looking at another 7k on top of the list price.

Put a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports on the front and you improve the traction drastically. Makes up for the lack of 4wd.

Golf is ridiculously expensive in Finland.

For example Leon ST 2.0 TSI 280 DSG is 40000€ here, Golf Variant R 2,0 TSI 300 DSG is 57500€ and comes with 18" wheels and without DCC.

I didnt buy my car so I couldn't take advantage of the broker deals.

I put a deposit down of £330 + vat and I pay the same per month for three years. Get half the vat back as a business. Thats with the extras I added too. You can get a boggo Leon Cupra ST DSG with 6 months upfront for £275 + vat pm

+1 when I spec'd a golf r to same spec as cupra St the cupra was a lot cheaper.

Plus the fact golf r's seem to be everywhere and look very boring (estate variant especially) the cupra St was a no brainer

Meppershall Beds.
think the Leon is a prettier car whicever style/shape you choose.
upfront it's better value, but residuals will maybe make up some shortfall. Have to wait and see on this.
but the Golf estate just looks boring....

I like the lines of the golf estate. Agree it is quite boxy and a little boring but I like that....,much the same way as I like the octavia estate

Just a question as 2 people I know said they actually prefer my 280 to their Golf R

I test drove the Golf R and the Cupra 280 back-to-back, for roughly an hour each on a mix of roads.

I liked both cars. I was lucky because I had come into some inheritance money so I could afford either. In the end, I went for the Cupra 280. Here are my thoughts:

Looks - The 280 is a lot better looking. The front, side and back profiles are nicer, and I also prefer the alloy wheels.

Interior - The R is a lot nicer inside visually, thanks to plenty of aluminium dotted around for a premium touch. But the Cupra 280 is just as comfortable and also feels like a classy car.

Speed - Identical, to be honest. I don't do traffic light dashes so my tests were rolling from 20 - 50 and 30 - 70 etc and they were both as fast as one another. I do think, looking back, that the 280 was marginally faster at higher speeds though.

Grip - The R only has an advantage off the line, after which the 280 feels a lot more planted on the twistys. The front end is sublime and it really tucks into corners.

Sound - I prefer the noise from the dual set up of the 280.

Comfort - The 280 has a superior ride quality, for example, Cupra mode is more bearable than R mode. Comfort mode in the Cupra is really, really nice for long journeys.

Overall - I liked the R a lot but the 280 was for me. I also tested a Golf GTI MK7 but it felt a lot slower than the 50bhp deficit would suggest.

You can get a 14 plate Leon 280 for 22 grand. That's over 5 grand loss in the first year

Lots of depreciation on the Seat compared to the Golf which is a shame. I think myself that the Seat is a better car
