CV Boot has split

Had my new shocks fitted today, hoping it would be the end of my suspension troubles - and it turns out my CV boot has split on the drivers side

Ive gone waaay over budget as it is on having my car lowered, its been problem after problem - and im completely skint, ive eaten into the money i set aside for my 4 day weekend down south with my girlfriend (on the 21st), and really cant afford to spend any more of it.

Do I NEED to get my CV boot fixed before driving the 4 hour trip (and of course return trip)? As I dont get paid till the 27th.

Ive been told the only danger is the grease all leaking out and causing friction on the CV Joint, but i cant imagine all the grease drying out inside of 2 weeks.

But then again i dont want to risk breaking down and ruining my holiday.

Seat want 100quid just for the labour charges alone, and its not under warrenty due to the lowering springs. Motorfactors could possible do it a bit cheaper.

What are my options? Cheers

a cv boot will cost about £6... and you could fit it yourself if you get the cone needed to fit them... or take it to a little back street mechanic.. i couldnt see more than 1 hours labour to fix.

I would advise against driving 4 hours on it.. the grease will spill out and wreck the joint.. meaning a new drive shaft.. and its not a case of the grease drying out.. as the cv joint spins at 70+ MPH it throws all the grease out.. over the inside of the wheel etc... so wont last as long as you think.

Mine went a year or two back, and by the time the dealers could fit me in (warranty job), it was time for a new joint. Had done a good few hundred miles of high speed driving and all the grease had come out - the whole wheelarch was covered.

i've had one done too - a little grease goes a long way when it splats.
i'm not convinced my new one is sealed right as i keep finding little blobs of grease still

I think you can get stick on type which would see you OK for a week or two, it goes over the existing one which needs a bit of cleaning first, not a permanent solution tho'

yeas mate ive been told of these, Its going in on thursday night now (hopefully). A Lad I know is doing it for £50 after hours.

I'd rather borrow the money, and know the job is done properly then keep putting it off and needing a new driveshaft or whatever ;)

wahey a really old thread sorry :search:

My passenger side knocks really badly... I'm planning on getting coilovers but i'm told theres a strong chance it could be my CV boot? Aparantly there is a little oil on it but i didn't have a look.

does knocking link with a faulty CV boot?

Cheers

Yes it does my friend, i few years back i had a PUG 106 and everytime i went round a corner it sounded like someone was playing the drums under my bonnet! It was awful, i swapped the driveshafts.. problem solved!

I mis-read.. the knocking won't happen due to a split cv boot unless all the grease has leaked out and the joint is very dry!

It knocks even when driving straight, if i have no radio on and there are slight bumps on the road i can hear it knock :/.

I hope it's just the shocks or something as i was coilovers anyway.

Cheers
