mechanic came to do my other cars MOT today and he said he didn't think it was the door seals as per pic above because they would be 'recessed'..no idea what he means but he said maybe he will have to take the carpets and everything off and see where it comes from..would that help?

as said it can be the pollen filter cover not on right apparently (I personally can't see how it would get all the way to the drivers side carpet) but easily checked.
All doors (not just the fronts) will need the Butyl strip treatment. Easy to do once you master how to get the door handles off. No need to struggle doing it all round the door. I only did the bottom halves of the doors as its was only actually about an inch underneath the speaker that was letting in water.

If your loosing coolant it could be anywhere. Mine leaked out the aux coolant pump (Cupra R).

They aren't recessed, nearly everyone on this site with a MK1 has had to reseal their doors due to water in the footwells at some point.

It is recessed just the foam seal sits inside and holds water that's why they rot away,I posted a link in this thread for the tape you need there's enough to do all the doors if needed.. To test door with window up just run the hose on the window you will see were the water comes out when the outer door panel is off, the car will flood if it's not done soon

I see thanks for the help everyone. Well we did take the door off so it was as prior pictured and run water and you could hear water getting in somewhere but couldn't see it leaking directly from anywhere seems as if its really coming from underneath the carpet on driver side..So the mechanic said he'll lift the carpets and test it..and to print him out this seat guide on replacing seals so I'm going to do that, he says he works better with pictures so I'll send that him and tell him to reseals the doors and see what happens..

water should just come out of the door drain holes, if your not seeing any they will be blocked , you also have to run water on the window for a while for build up..

ok..so the mechanic took the car away for 2 weeks. He told me the leak was coming from the back door and he resealed it..am sure he claimed it was coming in through the window seals outsid and footwell, but may not be right on this. Anyway he states he resealed it..but today cars leaking again..(ill attach pics)..secondly the coolant issue..my brother found the problem..the coolant tank had a leak..so the mechanic has replaced it..so far no issue now with coolant and no patches under the car..but leak problem still occurring. I'm getting the verbal issues from it..so guess maybe its time i took the car to someone else? generally whats a reasonable cost to fix this?

It's completely dependent on whats wrong with it..........if it's leaking from a hose it could be £20, if it's leaking from the water pump etc then it will be into the £100's as is a big job to get to it and you might as well change them cambelt and tensioner at the same time.
