Thinking of getting a Leon estate and wanted opinions on which you’d get between the 1.8 and the 2.0 petrol. I have a 2004 petrol Cupra and would like similar power, it’s currently making 217 bhp and nice torque after being mapped at Simon from Ecotech.

There are more 1.8s out there than 2.0 and wanted to know which one you’d get and why. Cheers

The Cupra has the 'bigger' engine, with larger turbo, larger HPFP and some other smaller differences, but the biggest difference is the gearbox. Depending on the year the Cupra either has the MQ350 (manual) or a DQ250(DSG-6) or DQ381(DSG-7) which are all considered strong boxes that can withstand the power of the engine (especially when tuned, 400bhp our of a Cupra engine is pretty common, with supporting mods).
The 1.8 unfortunately has either the MQ250(manual) or the DQ200 (DSG-7) gearbox, especially the DQ200 is a VERY WEAK box, that even has difficulty handling standard power, let alone when tuned.
the Cupras are of course a little more expensive to buy, but also running costs are a little higher and insurance too. But if you can spend the extra money, I would always go for the Cupra.
I, on the other hand, did purposely buy a 1.8 ST, but recently have swappet out the DQ200 for a DQ250, which I already had planned for ever since I bought the car (the purchase price was too good to pass out on...). The swap was forced a little sooner then desired as I had planned this during my summer vacation, but unfortunately the gearbox shat itself already in May, forcing me to speed up the process.
But now I have the benefit of the strong gearbox, with the 'lighter' car, but the 1.8 engine can be tuned to almost same levels as the Cupra as the block itself is just as strong. So next plan is to swap to an IS38 (Cupra turbo) and Cupra/mk7R HPFP, together with a 3.5" DP and upgrade intercooler and have it mapped to about 380bhp.

Thanks for that!! Appreciate the reply. Is the gearbox on the 2.0 FR the same as the 1.8FR, unfortunately I can’t get the Cupra because of the insurance, I live in a very expensive area for car insurance so was looking at the 2.0FR. I’m not after big power, 250 ish is more than enough for me. If I did get the Cupra then I’d have to debadge it and make it more inconspicuous and less attractive to thieves but the big calipers might be a give away lol, I could get steel wheels and dodgy wheel trims though 😂

2L 190 tsi has the dq381 7 speed clutch found in the cupra 300 fl.
2l 190 also has a gpf which the 1.8 does not, so sounds rubbish imo.
The earlier cars 68 and some 19s have an is20 and later ones have continental.
Another point, the 2l is a gen 3b and is not the same engine as the cupras.

So you think a 19 plate car would be better even though they probably don’t sound as nice, 👍

Think of the 1.8 as a de-stroked Cupra engine - can make big power but not paired with the best trans.
The 2.0 190 although is an EA888 family, it is the 'B' which is an important differentiator and means Budack (or modified Miller) combustion cycle - so is designed for efficiency with earlier closing valves and high swirl cylinder heads - great for efficiency, but strangle air flow for big power. Will still re-map to something like 250 - which is probably plenty for the road - but if you are going drag racing pick the 1.8 or Cupra.

I think my mind is made up, probably go for the 2.0 tsi as I value a good gearbox lol especially as I’m wanting a dsg and 250 is enough, if it’s as quick as my current Cupra then I’m happy

Even as standard, it's quite nippy around town and on country lanes has decent power to 60ish.
