morning all

i got up this morning and decided to check my oil after pulling the dipstick out to check it i noticed the dipstick didnt come out like it should the housing snapped off about 2 inches from the to. so now it doesnt like it should.

anyone else had this problem and would this cause any problems to the running of the car

thanks

its fairly common, they get brittle over time. Probably due to the plastic and that it gets heated repeatably..
(so much so that when i went i went to a dealer to order a new dipstick i was presented immediately with the plastic housing as they presumed this is what i meant. They break often during serbicing apparently).

Would it cause a problem running... i suspect you can get away with it (although id want to cover the remains to stop and debris getting into the housing).
But i by no means know for sure that its ok.
The resons im thinking it should be ok is that when you check oil you dont usually find oil too high on the dipstick and much of the length of the housing is to make it easy to check the oil rather than have to reach down into the bay which could be dangerous for untrained members of the public.,.
But i would be concerned if it was my car!

I broke the dipstick housing the other day while fitting a new thermostat. That really stressed me out. What I did was remove the rest of the housing and dipstick. I then cut down a cork and put it in the hole. I ran the car like this for 3 days with out a problem. Any way eBay have the new housings for £6.99 :). Hope this helps

at a guess id say they push fit, so removing old one may be a problem if its really very brittle, and some long arms would be useful..

The top of the housing also clips into the horizontal metal plate that sits between the intake manifold and front slam panel, (underneath the plastic cover).
You will probably have to unbolt this plate which is held in place with two allen key bolts which go horizontally into the inlet manifold, and perhaps there is also two nuts to undo on the plate also...

personally if i were you id call a dealer and order the part using your reg / chassis. You want to get the right one and a dealer will get it as quickly as anyone. Not the most pricey part,

although i suspect it will have the part number on the item somewhere

i think they are both the same to be honest, as it fits a few different cars. it fitted straight on mine but im running a cupra r.
if it looks the same as the pic im sure it will fit
