Hi,

I am going to start doing oil changes etc on my Leon 150TDi. Can anyone offer me any advice as where to find the Oil Filter & Fuel Filter

Do I need to change anything else?

Cheers,
N

oil filter is the big round thing on the engine.... looks like the one you buy (sounds daft, but it makes it easy to compare)

fuel filter is probably by the fuel tank - but you don't need to change that yet surely

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.......

When would I need to change the fuel filter then please? I have done 26000

Didn't wanna sound funny, but did you want to know where those filters were in the engine bay?? sorry then,,,

Fuel filter change should be every 40k *kilometers* IIRC. At least I do that at that distance.

BTW, it ain't near the tank,,,

The parts you're after are here at #9 and #14,,,

Sorry if I might have sounded c*cky or funny,,,

Oh, and the oil filter, it doesn't look like the one you buy since it's a cartridge type one and it's enclosed in its own housing and you can't see it.

Hi,

Sorry for the silence but had to go out! No worries I didnt think you were being cocky mate! I am a TOTAL beginner so any help / guidence is really appreciated.

So the oil filter is a cartridge not a cone?

There are some excellent videos showing various maintenance routines on this page. There's one showing how to deal with the fuel filter, and a particularly good one showing how to do an oil (and filter) change using a Pela extractor. Well worth downloading the Quicktime viewer and watching these!

Seeing some of these videos really makes it look easy - even for a numpty like me. I've got a Pela on order and will be doing additional 5000 mile oil changes in between normal services. Haven't decided whether to change the filter - probably not.

yes, the oil filter is a paper cartridge and you gotta open the oil filter cap to access to it,,, the chain-and-cloth method seems to be the best AFAIK,,,

An old thread I posted (4 years ago  ) covering DIY oil changes HERE

I've done it several times more now and was reaching the point of cutting a hole (or a flap) in the lower tray to allow access to the sump plug.....

Now bought myself a Pela oil extractor, but yet to try it. Should make things much easier

The oil filter cap on the PDs is black plastic and has a large hex "nut" moulded on the top of it, you should be able to turn it with a spanner (adjustable might be your best bet) or a large socket. I don't think they're done up too tight. If you pop the cover off the engine, the filter cap is handily positioned right at the front of the engine.

Having said that, I haven't changed my own filter yet, just the oil (with a Pela).

Just watch the fiddly spring clip on the fuel filter - I've been servicing the wifes' bora for last 40k (1 every 10k, I do all filters, regardless of service schedules, plus oil, with the vaccuum pela thing. And I don't charge myself for a new washer every oil change either, like the stealers do...)

I find the oil filter 'head' easy to undo by hand - grip with one hand, put one hand on top to grip the first, and twist. Well, works for me anyway (big hands).

I'll be doing the fuel filter on mine in next hundred miles or so (just short of 11k). IMHO the fuel filter is 2nd only to the oil/filter needing doing on a diesel, from past experience with shitruns, vauxhall etc.
