I do find it amusing how people assume it's going to be slow on the roads - I don't even have as much fun in my FR :D

Think I started this thread mooooonths ago so time for an update and great to see so many happy Freetrack owners

Mines now 2.5 years old with just short of 25k miles on the clock, first purchase of front tyres pending. Only 'fault' so far is the rear aux connectors broken (need to see dealer, think I bumped it with a metal case and broke wires)

+ points...
Still a great car for the young family, looks good, roomy, loaded with kit, 4wd great in the recent weather, rear tv screen and aux input for IPOD great (although mines broken just now), nearly 25k miles on front Pirelli P-Zeros, engine loosened up really well - surprises at the traffic lights for a lot of folks!

- points...
MPG is pretty poor, starting to bug me as I'm doing more miles now and seem to peak at about 400 miles/tank, probably only worth about £10k now as a trade in (good bargain for someone)

Great car if you need pace with roominess although don't expect great mpg even on the diesel

What to get next (now the kids are older and don't have quite as much stuff to cart around) is my problem now...any suggestions?

need to change the standard tyres now as they pretty much had it. going to try either nokian wrg2 or vredestein quatrac 3 as i want a tyre that will be good in these artic conditions we seem to get alot of these days. standard pirellis are 225/50/17 but can only get 225/45/17 in chosen brands, anyone know will these be ok??

That sort of change isn't recommended, as if you go to 45% or 55% the speedo will be out etc. Google 'tyre calculator'.

FWIW, once the Dunlop SP Sport 01s wear out on our Freetrack I'm going to replace them with a set of Goodyear Vector 4Seasons, which are available in 225/50/17 XL format. Direct link.

I have an (08) Freetrack TDI which i purchased in October 2008 (my third altea) and it has the built in multi media system (sat nav) which you can view DVD's on. Does anybody know of a way in which this system can be linked through to the screen in the rear. At the moment (like everyone else) we are viewing DVD's through a portable DVD player via the aux conection.

Do you know if it has any connections on the rear of the head unit? Guess the easiest thing to do is pull it out and have a look...

I guess you could potentially run some cables from the rear of that
(if it has any audio/video outputs) and connect them to the RCA connectors... wouldnt be hard to do..

Assuming it has audio & Video outputs that is !!

Would have a look myself but our Freetrack just has the bog standard head unit... Sat Nav unit would have been good though !!

I can't believe it! Having had my Freetrack for almost 5 months now and not seen another one on the road (despite looking!), I've seen two others on the roads recently.

First one was 3 weeks ago, a dark grey metallic Freetrack entering Ashtead, Surrey as I was leaving. The paintwork was a similar colour to the plastic bumpers, so was a tricky combo to spot.

The other was a silver Freetrack last night in East Molesey, looked very clean and neat and followed me for a mile or so. Horrible thought I had was, if I'd been rammed up the backside, that would have severely reduced the number of Freetracks on British roads! Thankfully, nothing untoward happened... unless you include seeing two Freetracks line astern!

If Freetracks are going to get popular, I'll have to get shot of it quick!

Cheers, Steve

I've had mine since June last year and have only seen 1 other, exactly the same colour (Black Magic) towing a caravan on the M4 near Swindon last September!

btw, got ours at SMC Windsor (Datchet) too!

Practical Modification Coming Up!

They seem a good bunch at SMC Windsor. Glad to hear someone else had bought a Freetrack from there - when I bought mine, they didn't seem to have had much experience with the model.

This time next week, I should have my first proper modification fitted - a Brink detatchable tow bar. Not very exciting, but very practical, particularly when I'm expecting to tow my caravan.

I already have the SEAT eletric kit - the Freetrack is pre-wired for towing, so the kit comprises a small loom to connect the 13 pin socket with the car's main loom. Using the genuine electrics should mean the reversing sensors turn off when towing and the brake stability program applies the brakes diagonally if the car detects the car and trailer snaking. Hope not to have to check that out for real! [B)] Steve

yeah I saw 2 x Freetracks when I was out for a run on the bike yesterday.

A black magic one in Kemnay and a Yellow one on the road from Lumsden to Rhynie....of course if your not familiar with the area then you will have no idea where that is LOL..

Black one was an 08 plate and the yellow one looked like it was pretty much brand new. Couldnt quite tell.

Nice to see... thats only 4 others that I have seen in total over a 24 month period of ownership in the local area...The second yellow one I have seen is owned by a Driving School of all things !

They should command or you would expect reasonable second hand values for a car that is relatively rare to see...athough..if we sold it I REALLY dont know what for !! XC60 perhaps?... but most likely get another one.. not sure the XC60 commands the massive difference in price over what is the same practicality !!.. Could be tempted by a TFSI one in the future!

We don't wanna tell too many people how good they are though do we? LOL

P.S... There are Loooooooods of Ford Kuga's around here, they dont even have a DVD screen in the rear as standard !! pfffff. :cartman:

I've seen another around here '08' plate in track grey - mostly on the M77 from Klilmarnock/Ayr direction

It is nice to have a car that is rare and I like getting asked questions about it!

Decided to keep the Freetrack for a while now - can't see any other car at the mo which comes close to power, looks and value. XC60 nice but soft to drive and pricey!

Anyways - off to give it a good clean and fit wiper blades and alu door trims seeing as we've a rare sunny day here [B)]

Hi,

Been looking at the Freetrack and really like it, however i need a ground clearance of 175mm for work but can't find no information on the net. Any help?

Had my wifes Freetrack MOT'ed at Kwik Fit!. The man asked what it was and he wondered why he could not do the brake test and had to do it on a road test LOL!

WOW ! you are a steady eddy, my pirellis barely saw 20,000 miles, i replaced them with Dunlop SP Sports which have been a good tyre.
Anyway mine is going up for sale now as mrs wants something smaller and i'll be getting a company car with next job.

Update ! : Freetrack now sold, guy coming from essex to collect it, it has been superb !
Pair of left hand drive headlights for leon/altea/toledo for sale if someone is looking for some.

Hi
Just thought i'd let you know i'll be picking up my Freetrack TFSI next thursday. Its just done over 40000 miles and the garage has said it is going to service it for me.
Has anyone else got more than 40000 miles and do they have any problems?
I'm also tring to find out some info on the 4X4 system. I think it is the same as 4motion. If so are people getting the haldex oil change done every 20000 miles?
I've still yet to see another one on the roads

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the community! You won't find many Freetracks on the road as there are only about 500 or so on the roads in the UK according to the website 'howmanyleft', and some Freetracks are tricky to spot, when the paintwork colour is similar to the bumpers!

The Haldex system is the same as that on a number of VW group cars (inc 4Motion, Skoda Scout etc) and seems relatively unobtrusive and effective. I keep seeing different estimates as to how much traction is shared to the rear axle all the time, so the car is mostly front wheel drive unless the traction breaks and the rear gives a good push.

I had my car serviced recently (36k miles) and the garage told me the Haldex system oil needs changing every 40k miles, so I had that done at the same time.

Cheers, Steve

Freetrack TDI

Welcome to the Freetrack ownership!

I've had my Freetrack for 3 years and have covered nearly 60,000 miles. I had the oil changed in the 4 wheel drive system at 40,000 miles as recommended. I've had no problems with the car whatsoever, its as much fun to drive as it always has been.

Found one

great thread guys - just found and bought a freetrack tdi - had to drive 500mile round trip from south wales to cornwall to get it, did not see another one on the whole trip.
Rare as rocking horse do do.
traded my xl for it (and a significant amount of cash) I'ts a different car to the xl - feels far more solid on the road.
43.5mpg on the cruise home so not bad.
