I'm interested in buying a Leon ST FR technology 1.8 TSI with the DSG gearbox.

Unfortunately my local dealer doesn't have a demonstrator for me to test drive.

They have offered the opportunity to drive a manual and then another Seat with the DSG gearbox but I thought I ask here to see if anyone had any opinions to share.

I noticed that Seat offer a 4 day test drive for company car buyers but they are refusing to let me have even a 1 hour test drive!

So if anyone has anything to share I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance.

In my opinion, based on owning a Leon Mk3 1.8TSi DSG FR 5-door since new in October 2013, the engine & 7-speed DSG gearbox are almost perfectly matched! A really great combination (at least in my opinion).

FRTSIman, many thanks for that. It might just be your opinion but it is exactly what I wanted to hear!

I find I get fully predictable & linear delivery of torque & power from the 1.8TSi DSG combination throughout the rev range. If I'm being extremely super nit-picking, then there is an ever so slight flat spot at approximately 1200 rpm, but this has negligible real-life adverse effect, as below and above this engine speed, torque & power delivery seem virtually linear!

Is there a engine that is not suited with DSG?

I don't know, but yesterday I test drove a new VW Golf Mk7.5 R-Line with the new 1.5TSi 150PS petrol engine & DSG gearbox, & found the combination to be a bit jerky when starting up from stationary in 1st and 2nd gear - Not a problem I have at all with the 1.8TSi DSG combination. Apart from that, the new engine seemed virtually indistinguishable from the existing 1.4TSi 150PS engine - Very smooth-running, but without the extra "eager edginess" of the 1.8TSi.

I dont like little diesels with DSG it just feels weird as when you put your foot down, it stretches the gear out when modern diesels run out of puff.

The Cupra however is wonderful with the DSG.

Ive only owned manual cars for 35 years but based on reviews ive ordered a 1.8 tsi DSG ST its actually been built this week. My current car is a 1.4 tsi golf and i have to say its been fantastic, never let me down in 8 years of ownership. But with age a more relaxed drive is what im looking for with the DSG.

DSG is what's for girls and the elderly/disabled... it makes any car boring and un-involving to drive imo...........Get the manual!

Thanks all for the 'advice'!

We need an estate so the Ibiza is not suitable and as my wife is disabled the DSG 'box is the best solution!

I was gonna go for the 1.8 TSI until I found out that the 280 Cupra only had 1mpg difference on the official fuel economy...

Much as I love a heated debate my only practical advice is to find another dealer eg one selling a used model.

I'm also very pleased with the combination of the 1.8 TSi with DSG. The only niggle I have with mine is some judder when in 2nd gear (feels like it's riding the clutch) when in Normal mode; although it doesn't seem prone to doing so when in Sport mode.

I was also surprised at how little difference there is in the MPG but sadly couldn't justify spending an extra £7K

Appreciate what you are saying but I've had a look and can't find a used one anywhere close to me.
The order will be for a new car as it will be via Motability.

Anyway people on here have given me the confidence to test drive a 1.8 manual and another model with a DSG box.

All being well I'l like them and place an order.
