Hi guys,

I’m facing a DMF replacement on my car (2.0CRTDi 150HP DSG, ~170k km) and I’m trying to decide whether it makes sense to replace the clutch at the same time.

The DMF is already confirmed bad (noise/vibration), so the gearbox has to come out anyway. The clutch itself is still “working”, but obviously it has seen the same mileage and the same vibrations from the failing DMF.

On one hand, the clutch is an extra cost.

On the other hand, if it fails later, it means pulling the gearbox again and paying labor twice.

For those who’ve been through this:

  • Did you replace DMF only and regret not doing the clutch?
  • Or did you keep the old clutch and it was fine long-term?
  • Any DSG-specific experiences welcome (adaptation issues, vibrations, etc.)

Thanks in advance!

At your millage clutch death is unlikely to be too far in your future. If you're planning on keeping the car for a while I'd change it.

Fitting an old clutch to a new flywheel is basically the equivalent of fitting new brake discs without pads.

The exception being on a DSG where the clutch failing at any point is not particularly likely at all.

I'm sure that a DSG box does not have a clutch at the flywheel, they are in the gearbox internals.

The clutch is at the flywheel but it's a wet clutch pack fitted on the DQ250/381/500 gearboxes, they have a very minute failure rate.

I must admit that I didn't know much about the workings of the DSG box, I just had a look at the Seat Self Study PDF's, very interesting to see how the flywheel is connected to the Clutch Packs.
