I just use diluted tfr few sprays then a jet wash for few seconds then i just clean plastics if still dirty clean with ag vinyl and rubber cleaner does a good a job

Water and bodywork shampoo, use a microfibre cloth, rinse off by wringing out clean water from the cloth, dry down and treat with autoglym plastic/rubber spray stuff.
Use tar remover on anything really stubborn (girly's car rather than mine as it's kept on top of)
 
Below is a picture of the engine bay of my Leon after six years of ownership, pretty much as it was when it came out of the factory.
All I ever did with it was wipe it down with a sponge and the water/shampoo left over from washing the car. I think the trick is not to let it get too dirty in the first place.



By way of comparison, here is a picture of the engine bay when the car was brand new.

Auto glym plastic and rubber dressing spray on wipe off like the above said don't let it get too dirty ten it shouldn't be to hard to clean
