Engine Coolant Sensor

Hi All,

Having problems with my Leon 1.6 starting from warm, it turns over fine but doesnt fire. after a while it kicks in fine. Starting from cold is fine!

After lots of reading I think this could be down to the Engine Coolant Sensor, however im just wondering - if the sensor was faulty, would the dash temp guage read incorrect? as mine seems to be giving good readings?

if my dash is reading correct, does that mean my sensor is ok?

ive also read that some cars have a temp sensor which gives reading to the ECU and a temp sender which provides info to the dash?

can anyone help?

if it is a coolant sensor, any ideas where I could pick one up, eurocarparts doesnt seem to have them online for my car, didnt want to wait for ebay delivery as its getting worse and worse!

Hi,

Just called eurocarparts, they have one in stock (green top sensor) and its 4 pin. He said that usually means it feeds the ECU and Dash.

I also hooked the car up to my laptop last night, dont have vag-com but have some cheaper alternative software, not the best I know.. it showed the engine coolant temp as really random values, would go from 0, to 40, then up to above 100, then back down to 0, then sometimes in the minus!

so I know thats not right, but just curious about this sensor as if it feeds the dash, then should I be seeing the temp guage go mad?

personally I trust euro car parts I have bought 3 different parts for 2 different cars and each time they have supplied the wrong part. Cheap yes but for a very good reason THEY ARE SHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get the right part first time and go somewhere else (usually cheaper for the right part anyway)

Ill avoid euro then.

Any ideas on whether that is the right part I need to change though (the coolant sensor) - still unsure whether a bad sensor would also give false dash readings which im not getting?

Thanks Guys - what about the issue that the temp guage on the dash reads correct and how I would expect it, but im still showing problems of a faulty sensor?

does the dash read from that sensor?

Only two things in the system the cts and the thermostat if the cts doesn't do anything the stat might need replacing.
Weather as got a lot colder recently so any problems will show their ugly heads.

Yeah as the cts as 2 signals one for ecu and one for the dash

Just noticed that GSF list two sensors, both for my engine code (BCB) - Part No : 929VG0173 and Part No : 929VG0170

Not clued up on yours sorry what you can do is sign up to http://www.vagcat.com/ then top right is parts catalogue then search the part numbers you have and compare

It generally should do, but as it's a split signal one could go funny...not worth the risk for the cost they are.

Turning over but not firing is usually a coil pack. Had the same symptoms on my 1.6 earlier in the year.

Once the coil pack has completely died you might find it'll fire up but only on 3 cylinders.

After you've had the coil changed, change the spark plugs as well to reduce the chance of another pack from going.
