Engine Cutting Out

I bought a 2004 54 reg 1.4sx 16v Seat Ibiza about 2 months ago. I am getting a constant problem,the problem is when im coming up to a junction or slowing down, the engine seems to cut out. At first I questioned my driving,so got other people to drive it and still the same problem. Its been back to garage several times and had things done to it. Its due to go in next week to have a new Throttle Housing put on all being done under warranty thankfully, but I just wondered if anyone had had a similar problem and found a cure for it.

Cheers

air flow meter maybe? heard of corsa's and fiesta's having similar problems! the air flow meter stops reading the airflow properly and the engine cuts out as it can't mix the fuel to air properly.

Well when I took it in the other week,the garage replaced my MAP Sensor, which is something to do with the air flow i think he was telling me(im not all that clever when it comes to cars) it still happened after that, I took it about a week later and he said he'd fiddled with a few things but before doing so he put it on the Diag and no faults were showing, which he told me when you sometimes have a faulty throttle housing(which is due to be replaced next week) that a fault doesnt always show on the Diag.

This is from a ford forum, however similar rules apply;

Clean the throttle body and idle speed control valve with some carb cleaner and with a bit of luck you'll owe me a drink tongue.gif

Well, teh Ford spares dept call it "air bypass valve" I thought it was called the idle control valve! anyway, 2 bolts and off it comes, good squirt of carb cleaner (£5.79), new rubber o ring (£1.50+vat) - mine had shrunk and away we went. no problems since and seems to run a bit better. Less than a tenner, instead of teh "hmmmmm, could be hundreds" a garage quoted

I think simply this is what happens;

When you slow down you take your foot off the accelerator, at this point the idle control valve should kick in and stop the revs going below 900 or whatever idle is for your car, if the valve sticks then the engine will slow down of its own and stall.

Not sure where it would be exactly on your car, but the accelerator pedal wire goes to the throttle body housing, usually next to it is a solenoid rod with a wire connection. This does the job of your foot basically.

If your car idles okay when you start it up, then it sounds like the idle control valve is sticking.
