5/40 Ester based fully synth if you care for your engine. There's a section on opie website. You're looking at least £40 a bottle

Everyone has an opinion on this so you wont get conclusive advice here. My tupence worth - the VW recommended oil for 1.8T engines is 5W30 fully synthetic, I have yet to read compelling enough evidence to go for anything other than that. Whatever you go for though make sure its good quality stuff, Castrol / Mobil / Millers / Quantum etc and not supermarket or Halfords specials, I think that would make a far bigger difference than going to 5w40 or 10w40 etc.

I use a halfords vw 5w30, it's just a rebranded oil as halfords dont make there own oil. Not sure what brand it would be.

I believe Halfords oil is Comma, which, in it's own right isn't bad.

Wouldn't go for 10w40 when you can buy 5w40 - just as thick at higher temps but thinner when cold for better cold start protection.

Anyway their conclusion was that unless you have a very good reason not to, just stick with what it says in the hand book.

Have you read the article for modded cars? Basically saying heat is increased massively compared to power increases... For that reason I'd rather use a 40 viscosity on the basis it's likely to be nearer the required viscosity at the higher temps than a 5-30 would be, and the 30 would be too thin when the engine gets hotter due to the increased power. Happy to loose an mpg or two for the extra protection it should be giving!
