Enging "knocking" occurs when the pressure or temperature inside the combustion chamber is enough for the petrol oxygen mixture to auto ignite!

When studying this inside a lab at uni, we found it to be very damaging as the combustion is concentrated in spots inside the chamber and will cause pits inside!

i gett a rattling at startup! it goes when i turn the car off and on again? any ideas??

Sounds like the initial fill-up of the hydraulic tappet capsules. Remember one of these capsules is used for the push on the timing-chain tensioner, and you can expect expiry of the engine if the chain jumps teeth.
Do oil-changes every 6 months, using the short-trip spec oil, ie MOBIL 1 ESP 5W30, fully synthetic. ( £45 at KWIK-FIT ).
