Ok just went out and gave it a test. Looks like the rattle is coming from the front of the engine where that silver mounting goes over the top of the exhaust. It's slightly loose and that might be the rattling but it does sound like more than just a loose bit of metal. The exhaust manifold at the engine end sounds blown too :(

Yeah, thats your exhaust manifold heatshield. And its a pain in the ass, as the nuts usually rust away, meaning you can't tighten them up. With my can I had to go to extreme a bit by drilling a hold on the side of the heat shield and tying it up to the alternator, to stop it from rattling.

Yeah I spotted a rusty bolt. it's actually bright pink. I gave the shield a wobble and it does sound similar to the rattle.

Damnit.

I am no good with bolts n things. I shall have to get the workshop to do it for me.

They will usually just "weld" the bolt on. Also if in future you ever get a rattle coming from below your car, I can guarantee you that its the CAT heatshield, but hopefully you won't

Right, i had another play around at lunch and it doesn't seem to be that shield at all.

It's definitely something in the engine or around that area. Possibly tappets(sp) but it really does sound nasty :(

Dropped it in the garage and they are going to have a quick look for me. handy having them up the road from work.

Looks like there may be a crack somewhere on the manifold or something he said. Theres a lot of build up of black gunge and stuff on the front of the engine near the manifold shield.

i have no idea what he was rattling on about really hehe

I'd bet a fiver that that's your problem. You wont hear it when you boot it in third because by then the car is going too quickly to notice it. To check if its your heatshield, look underneath your car and using a long stick (ghetto style  ) hit that heat shield. If you dont know what it looks like, it roughly half way underneath your car in the center and is also usually the lowest part of the car. So as hit it with that stick and it should rattle if it is the heatshield. Personally I ripped mine off because it was doing my head in, because its a pain in the ass to repair.

Car failed the MOT - going in to repair on Wednesday. The rattle I had wasn't coming from the manifold shield but the actual manifold, it has a crack in it and that's what's sounding like a horrid blowing/rattle. Few hundred to fix EEEEK !!
