My 2004 Ibiza broke down a month ago so I bought an engine from eBay and when It arrived at the garage week I was told it was in poor condition (bad corrosion on the outside) but since It came with a 3 month warranty and the seller had good feedback I decided to have it fitted anyway.

A few days later I got a call from the mechanic telling me that he has fitted the engine and It doesn't work. Later on he said that he had a look and found that the timing chain was off by two teeth

I called the breaker yard that sold the engine and they are adament that they tested the engine upon removal, the guy on the phone even said that he drove the car it came from and is insisting it couldn't have been his fault. He claims my mechanic must have broken it by ''turning the engine backwards'' which seems very unlikely. I asked him for proof that the engine worked and after arguing for ages he agreed to send me a video of the engine. A few days later a I got a call saying that they'd give me my money back for engine but I'm still left to pay for the fitting costs..

I called the consumer advice line and that said that because the engine was advertised as working it is classed as false advertising and that means they have to pay for costs incurred due to this.

On eBay it showed a picture of the engine inside a green Ibiza with part of the engine cover off.

When I finally got an email with the 'proof' of the engine having worked it was a video of a car which has no clearly visible paint, no bodywork, most of the parts removed but for some reason it has the plastic part of the engine cover put back on. I also got a copy of a letter stating where they had bought a green Ibiza that said it started and ran but I have no proof that that is where the engine came from.

Long story short: I don't think the engine I've been sent is the one advertised or shown in the video/document/eBay page and I need to find out somehow if this engine is actually from there.

I know that engines have unique codes written on that match up to frame numbers and registration but I don't know where this number is on the engine or how to find out if they match, could anyone help me with this?

I've also been told that cars sold from dealers have a 3 month warranty that has just expired in my case, but since it broke down a month ago, do I have any right to claim from them?

Thanks for reading,

Daryl.

Right, this is crap news either way, take a look on the timing cover at the "front" of the engine, though I can't think of when VAG started to place a paper label on there.

For further help, note the original engine model from your V5 and ask about s/n location at your local VAG dealer.

Trouble is, once you have that, who is say that that was the original engine in the car it was reputed to have been removed from - sorry, tracing the donor car via VAG might fail for that reason.

I real don't know where you stand in solving this, I'm sure that there will be lots of citizen's advise help available - but will they help you sort this quickly?

How did you pay for this engine, ie PayPal, though their help/protection does not seem to be worth much to the buyer!

Good luck.

As rum4mo says above. If you used paypal, then go to them. They were suprisingly easy to deal with when i had a problem with my account before.

If you paid for it on credit card then that is even better as you have even more rights. Just google it if so, the credit card company will often do a chargeback against the place you bought the engine from.

Thanks for your replies, I bought the engine with PayPal and have gone through their procedure, but it seems like the website expects me to send the engine back which means more fitting cost which are about as much as the engine is worth (£300), consumer advice has told me that they are liable for fitting costs but I have to prove the item wasn't as described so I'm going to have to find if this engine came from the car they claim it did but without the reg of the previous car this is going to be difficult. When I called the a dealer last they said they weren't going to pay any fitting costs but they'd let me keep the engine and refund me for it, which to me just proves they know its a paperweight.. But after arguing a bit afterwards I don't know if this'll be the case.

Thanks again,

Daryl.

I've got a text from my mechanic saying that the numbers on the side of the engine are ''o3e109211d" and "672312" I'm not sure which is the engine no. according to the receipt I got with my car the old engine number began with AZQ so I'm confused, could anyone tell me if one of these is the engine number?

I'd think that it is the second number, there is a listing/grouping somewhere that links engines and gearboxes(codes and s/n) into groups model wise along with the period each VAG model used it over. I think that info is in the official VAG parts list application. Not much good if I can't get clearer than that though!

Thanks RUM4MO, now I need to get the reg of the Green Ibiza the new Engine came from and then hopefully see if the numbers match up, but I'm not sure how to check. Do you know where I can find this "parts list application" and will it match up that specific car or just a batch of them?

I agree with rum4mo, second number is your engine number. AZQ is just the engine "code"
