Hello everyone.

I may have the option of picking up a 2004 Leon SE (110 TDi) with a knackered engine. I'm not sure what is wrong with the engine exactly but I'm thinking worst case I'll replace it. I want the car as a run around so don't want to drop the MPGs too far but am thinking why not go for something with a bit more 'go'.

So are there any engine swaps that are pretty straight forward? Don't mind a bit of work but obviously not so much that it'll defeat the object of a cheap run around. If that was the case would I be better off getting another 110 and chipping that?

Thanks,
Secerno

Thanks MJ!

So that would be the best option? Can you recommend a good place to pick up an engine?

There tends to be all sorts of vag engines on ebay, check which is compatible with your car as i'm sure you'd be able to use the engine from:

Golf mk4
Leon
Toledo
Octavia
A3
Bora
MK3 Ibiza

Theres loads but like you've already said - replace the engine then have it remapped, some people can remap this engine to around 140-150bhp without any other mods.

That was going to be my next question! Everyone says "Leon's the same as a Golf" but is tht true? Are all the VAG 1.9TDIs plug and play or would I need ECUs, etc? I did a (admitedly, quick) search but am not quite sure. Are there a list of engine codes somewhere that will all work in place of each other?

Well the ASV is the code of the standard 1.9tdi 110 used in the leon and definatly the golf, bora, octavia and toledo. If you find one with this code it will just be plug and play as they are all ASV and are all the 110 varient. You shouldnt need to change the ecu because they should all share the same one - so the one already fitted to your vehicle should suffice.

Thanks again.

If the maths works out I'll probably be asking for more help soon!
