Engine temperature sender unit

I'm the owner of a '53 plate Leon S (1.4) and I'm having problems with my engine temperature guage which is registering anywhere between no reading at all to 45% of the engine temp range!
I take it that it's the engine temperature sender that's at fault but can anyone please tell me where it's located (top right of the engine as you face it from the front or elsewhere - but where?!) and how to replace the same? Any help would be much appreciated - Thanks
