The 85% 'rule' is a guide that inexperienced caravanners are well advised to keep to, but it's not a law. Insurance companies will refuse to pay if the trailer weight exceeds the limit set by the car manufacturer.

Hi,

Just a side note, I was flicking through the manual for my car last night, and an amendment sheet fell out with some changed to the towing weight.

Obviously there was an error in the manual. I'll post it up over the weekend.

Bluehandle, any chance of a scan or photo of the amendment page?

Seat UK have informed me that on week 22 of 2011 the towing weights were being reduced. But my car which is week 7 (2011) appears to have the new week 22 towing capacity, my car also isn't even a facelift model. For the time being Seat UK are paying for me to use a Seat alhambra for towing and it ultimately looks like Seat are going to source me a new car.

Hi,

OK, the first 3 images are from the Appendix Doc (I have labeled each pic appropriately with red Script Type) They appear to be the changes for the Automatic gearbox though, so maybe not much help)

The rest are scans from the original Manual (again labeled)

This Exeo and documentation was delivered 25 March 2011 - hope it helps.

Thanks for the scans. Still says 1600kg as the towing weight for the 143 CR TDI manual, the amendments are just for the new multitronic auto model which can tow 1700kg.

Found out now that all 143 2.0 CR Exeo towing weights are now 1400KG due to a change in the gear ratio by the factory.

Got this quote through today for a Witter:-
The cost to supply & fit a flange detachable tow bar with twin electric sockets, in our workshop, will be £583.00 plus VAT. so £699 !!!!!!!!!! +60p
I hope that includes talking to the can bus system, which Escalates the costs even more !!!?? - progress is a wonderful thing!!

Due to the change in the towing specification Seat UK replaced my SE Tech 143 for a brand new Sport Tech 170 free of charge. :D

I hope my 2010 Exeo can tow 1600kg as in the brochure as I have just purchased my new van and its 1490kg max laden, fingers crossed !!

now that car is nearly here planning the towbar - so £600+ for detachable witter + dealers charge for reprogramming to isolate reversing sensors if electrics conected. Small fitter £450...still dealers on top(still witter).

Any views is this a "get it done properly" job using witter or does it not really matter???

is the scope for C*** up great or small ????? £450 v £600

I've opted for the Westfalia Swan-neck, with twin 7-pin electrics, and 7-way bypass relay unit.

£139 delivered ;)

Haven't opted for the vehicle specific wiring harness, as I can't justify the 'benefits' vs. the cost.

Should receive it tomorrow, and will be fitting on Saturday. The mechanical side of things should be relatively easy, and I don't see the electrics posing too much of a problem.

Will try and take as many pics as I can, and will write a DIY guide when I get the chance.

been qouted 235 quid single electrics 30 more for double, as for the rev sensors does it really matter if you hearing the pips ?

Hi All.

I have just had a towbar fitted & I now tow a caravan (sorry).
I went very deep into towing weights & the way it was explained to me was while you car is capable of towing 1600kgs due to the engine touque ,by law you cannot exceed the kerb weight of the viecle ie 1505kgs saloon & 1565 for the ST.

It is the likes of the caravan clubs that say you should not tow more than 85% of the kerb weight.

By the way my 143 SE Tech pulls a 1100kg van very well & returns just over 30mpg.

Hope that helps.

 Trapper

Well, I can safely say that DIY'ing the towbar electrics isn't a job of anyone who's not experienced with auto-electrics!!!

It's take me 3 hours to run the power-feed ( 2 x 15A fused cables) from the battery to the boot area, and then working out which cables to tap in to for the various functions.

Having completed it, I'm glad I did it, as I've learnt a hell of a lot. But if I hadn't had some previous experience, I would not have even attempted it. And the ~£100 I was quoted to get a 'pro' to fit the towbar and electrics, is quite reasonable, as it's about a 4-5hr job I would say.

Old thread but an interesting one.

I had a tobar fitted last week on my 2013 Exeo ST 170 sports tech, its a swan neck and I had it correctly coded to disable the rear fogs and reverse sensors when connected to the caravan. Mine had the new 13ping (dual electrics) and the proper wiring kit whiich also is coded so the ABS knows there's van on the back so if it starts to snake the car can adjust the braking on the wheels to bring it back under control.

It also controls the cooling fan too, very clever stuff and that why its expensive. Got mine done for £429 including a Y lead to convert new 13pin to older dual 7 pin. Excellent service from Ace Towbars in Swindon (Neil).

I will see on Saturday how my 1420 KG van tows with the Seat, as we usually use our Discovery 2.
