Valved exhausts divert exhaust flow away from a minimally muffled/resonated/usually near straight piped path to a muffled path with valve closed (i.e larger rear back box with internal construction that isn’t straight piped through). If the back boxes are a different size/internal construction, you could still benefit from a valved exhaust, considering the exhaust sound for each is likely different. You can DIY a custom valved exhaust with remote control for far cheaper than buying one off the shelf with the same parts:

1. Helical (or similar) exhaust valve -> can buy individually from Milltek
2. Kuster electronic valve servomotor (from Ford, Audi, Porsche, VW or Volvo models on EBay)
3. AWE Switchpath remote

With the GPF, it apparently muffles more sound than the pre-GPF resonated systems.

Thanks for this info, didn't know about the valve parts you mentioned.
Creating a bypass system next to the OEM exhaust parts will be very hard, if possible at all, because of the very limited free space.....
Did anyone managed to do this?

Some links to images/video of valved Cupra ST exhausts by a well reputed custom exhaust fabricator in the UK, Tony Banks.

In most systems the valve is located on the Y-pipe before the passenger side backbox, which is straight piped internally. These vehicles appear to be pre-GPF. Upgrading to a 200cell aftermarket downpipe will certainly make any exhaust sound a bit louder than stock, which is the most restrictive part in the exhaust system...the next most restrictive being the Y-pipe, which necks down to 55mm (from 65mm). The R ST backboxes are already fairly straight through internally. To get more sound without deleting the GPF, Hurricane's system uses the valve to divert to/from larger diameter 3.5" straight piping to the passenger side with smaller diameter tubing from the Y to a driver's side backbox.

HG-Motorsport's Ego-X system does the same, with what appears to be a small muffler on the passenger side.

Both of those systems are very expensive. From my research, using a high-quality Helical valve (come in 2.5", 2.75" & 3" diameters: https://www.exhaustek.com/collectio...-kuster-valve-with-3-pin-valve-motor-assembly) with 3-pin valve motor assembly for a Kuster actuator (can find used cheaply on Ebay), you could have a custom exhaust fabricated with OEM parts in the style of Hurricane or HG-Motorsport for less money, using an AWE Switchpath remote to switch between open/closed. HG-motorsport also sells their valves/remotes separately on their website if those are easier to come by in the EU.

You again found a lot of options, very interesting. Thanks a lot. But any of these options change about the entire exhaust system, most (or all?) deleting both GPF's, resulting in quite an increase in sound/pops/bangs. Great if you are looking for that. More than I would like. My preference would be a bigger downpipe with 200 cell cat, connected to both parallel OEM GPF's plus the original Cupra R ST back exhaust system. As far as I know a downpipe like this isn't made by any of the suppliers. If there ever comes a time, how effective would it be performance wise?

I thought you were interested in a catback/axleback system as you were asking about valved options. None of the GPF-back exhaust systems I linked above delete the GPF. That’s accomplished with an aftermarket downpipe. I did a quick search and all the ROW aftermarket down pipes I found delete the GPF system.

What are your goals for the car? If it’s improvement in sound alone, get a catback exhaust. If you’re interested in tuning/making more power, the stock backboxes aren’t a significant restriction, they’re already fairly straight though in design. The Y-pipe and downpipe are the biggest restriction in flow due to bottlenecks in diameter.
