My OE rear silencer hanging bracket broke off from the silencer :(

A garage just told me they couldn't weld it as the exhaust would be too thin and simply put hole in it.

Is this right? Dont really want to fork out for a new exhaust at this time!

Cheers

Sounds about right, any standard exhaust will be at least 6 years old now, so will be rusty & thin

had similar problem on my 53 lc
helpfull guys at motosave put a u clamp all round tail piece and then hooked it on to rubber mount. no welding no sweat passed mot twice since done cost £10.:D

It depends on the skill of the welder to be honest, as i managed to do mine ok...
Having said that, it was a REALLY crappy bit of welding, as the thin tube wall and rust doesnt give good conductivity. Also they probably dont want to risk it, as if they do blow a hole in it because they have the current turned up too high on the mig plant, then they would be liable to put it right/not charge for their labour.

All in all, a new aftermarket cat back is the best plan, as even if you do manage to sort it now, its only a matter of time until it goes completely, and its not worth paying £100 or so for a welder to have a go, when you would be 1/3 of the way to a milltek/blueflame.

I had the same issue - the rear hanger (behind bumper) has rusted and snapped off - the rest of the exhaust was in good condition though, so I had a go at welding the bracket back on - it was really easy to weld up, i used an old bolt to add an extra 'support' in too

Well worth a go before shelling out on a new system
