Fault scanner alternatives to vag-com

Most people on here use vag-com, but I've not seen anyone mention alternative fault scanners. Has anyone used any of these products?

That last one is a lot cheaper than vag-com, if all you want is a basic fault code reader.

A mate of mine bought this one off Ebay for his Passat which he's got shot of so I've inherited it now.
It's a basic fault code reader, comparable to the last one you've listed but considerably cheaper, comes with a 30 page manual, of which 20 pages are fault code listings, and works fine on my LC.

VAGCOM is more than a fault code reader. You can alter settings and log how the car performs among other things making it a very usefull tool.

Thanks guys I think I'll buy one. I know you can do more with vag-com, but in 6 years of owning the car I've never felt the need to alter settings on it. Besides I assume the guys at VW/Seat know more about engine setup than me
