Faulty dsg mechatronics

Car is seat leon 63 reg mileage 77k.

So the garage whom i purchased the car from their warranty had expired and i decided to purchase seat extended warranty on 5th October and it had a start date of 5th November as like all warranties there is a 30 day period. During that period i had covered over 700 miles.

3 days after warranty started i had a dsg gearbox error on the dash saying reverse gear not available and this happened three times and went into a limp mode.

It is a 7 speed DSG dry clutch with no oil change intervals.

I decided to have the car recovered into my local Seat dealership as i had their all component extended warranty. They stripped the mechatronic unit and found some things in there and suggested a entire gearbox replacement via the warranty. The warranty team is disputing stating the fault occurred so soon of the warranty being started so they think the fault pre existed. The dealer also found a sporadic fault stored in the system from the gear selector around 20 october. But the dealership is trying to convince the warranty team that this has nothing to with the mechatronics.

I know these dry clutch dsg boxes are known to be faulty and i mean whether the problem occurs an hour after warranty starts surely as nothing to do with how long i have had the warranty as the warranty cover sudden and unexpected breakdown.

Any advice would be great please.

I’d speak to trading standards. They’ll give you good advice. SEAT have no proof that it was a pre existing fault so f##k ‘em. Trading standards will be able to advise you. If SEAT continue to piss you about, send them a polite but firm email stating everything that has happened and that you are pursuing it through trading standards - you have to create a paper trail. I did it with Nat West Bank and they caved in and I got my £850 back.

Without pouring over the small print re pre-existing conditions, that's the reason most (including home electrical) insurers wait 30 days before warranty becomes effective and you can claim. If you were not aware of any earlier selection issues via warning light then surely the onus would be on the warranty company to prove you knew the issue pre-existed, irrespective of what was recorded. Good luck.

The dealer has told me that warranty team are sending an engineer from Rac for an inspection of the mechtronics unit and the car. Makes you wonder is warranty is worth buying if the companies just try to wriggle their way out of paying.

This is why I’ve never bothered with it. Car manufacturers exist to make money - they just happen to do it by making cars......and trying to sell you GAP insurance, extra warranty, paint protection, PCPs etc etc - they just try to bend you over the table and nail you in the keyster.

Did you take out legal cover with your car insurance, if so that could be a good place for advice.

If the fault didn't show itself until after the 5th November then they have to honour their own terms and conditions. They are the ones that drew a line in the sand at 30 days. There's an equal chance a fault can occur the day after cover starts as on any other day during the cover period. The onus is on them to prove the fault was pre-existing and that you would have been aware of it.

If we had a major unit replacement under any extended warranty (OEM or otherwise) an independent engineer would usually come out to inspect and we'd always take the customer side. After all we'd want to get the repair done ;). The only issue was who 'funded' any courtesy car.

after a week delay i was told the warranty has authorised the dsg replacement and will be in here in 10 days as its on back order. Asked the seat dealer for a courtesy and they happily provided one midweek. Gotta say having an extended warranty is worth it. A dsg gearbox would have cost well over £5000.
