I may have to pay to get mine done then, been going at it for half an hours and they won't budge. I'm using the longest bar ive got! Theres no way of change the springs without removing the axle bolt? Cheers

You can change the springs without removing the axle bolt. I did both of mine without removing them. Compress the spring on the car with spring clamps, this will in theory, shorten the shocker. In my case i used a length of 2x2 and placed one end under the anti roll bar link bracket on the strut and the other end on a trolley jack. I jacked up the strut and pulled it free of the hub. Best to have someone on hand, not easy on your own. If you need a few more mm to get it to clear, get your helper to press down on the disc with their foot.

If you try and jack the strut up without the spring clamps on, you will have too much tension from the spring as you jack it up and could cause injury if it slips. It's vital to clamp the spring down as far as possible before trying the above method.

Hope this helps

Serviced by seat mate? How much did they charge? Also did yiu have the alignment done at the same time?

No, serviced by independent garage with ex VW tech. Yeah alignment was done as well. They fitted the springs and left the car overnight, then did a few miles for the springs to settle before doing the alignment.

tried doing mine today. Got the rears done in less than 10 mins for the pair. As for the fronts... well lets just say its riding high -_- ....... Couldn't even get the drop link off on the drivers side. Used heat and even ground half the nut off. Still wouldn't budge. And for the other side one of the 'captive' top mount nuts decided to give up meaning that I couldn't get that out. After a few hours swearing and shouting I managed to get it off but by this time it was closing time :( so had to put it all back. What a Disappointment. So the struggle will resume again tomorrow. :S

I know this pain, sacked it off and ended up getting a mechanic to sort it out, couldn't be arsed with the hassle.

I decided to buy two new droplinks too just because it seemed like a good idea to replace them while we were there.

I actually tried this method myself but struggled to get enough room to get two sets of spring compressors in. I've actually seen someone compress the strut before by jacking the hub then wrapping like 100 tie wraps round the compressed spring!! Incredibly dangerous but i think it actually worked the tie wraps held but very lucky if you ask me!!

I think I'll have one more go next weekend then if im defeated again I'll pay someone to do it!
