Hi guys,

Never posted here before and don’t know that much about cars but I’m hoping you can give me some advice on a nightmare call I’ve just had from my local Seat dealer.

My 2008 Leon 1.9TDI is in for a standard service and the service manager has just phoned me up telling me I need a new flywheel and clutch fitted and that’s going to cost me £1100. I am devastated as I only bought the car about 18 months ago, it only has 28K on it and it’s not long out of warranty.

I did hear a strange noise and vibration coming from the car about a week ago but knew it was going in for a service so didn’t pay much attention to it.

Should this sort of thing have happened to a 3.5 year old car with only 28k miles? Im in total shock as I had an Astra SRI 1.8 with 65K miles for 6 years before this Leon and it never needed a fraction on this sort money spent on it.

Going to price round some private mechanics and see what price the quote, what would be a reasonable amount to pay for this sort of work?

Sincere thanks

It does seem like a very low mileage and age for a clutch and flywheel failure.
Maybe get a second opinion from another garage.
I had a noise and vibration on my previous car and 3 dealers had different opinions ranging from gearbox bearings to flywheel to driveshaft. Never did get to the bottom of it so traded it in.

Flywheels can be expensive but I would have though you could get it fitted for slighty less, I'm not sure if you can confirm the DMF has failed without stripping the gearbox out of the car, I would get a second opinion from a good indi, if you post where you are i'm sure someone could reccommend someone.

Is it 5 or 6 speed box?

Reason i ask is Skoda do a replacement SMF to replace the troublesome DMF on the 1.9 5 Speed boxes

Has the car got FSH? reason i ask if it does then contact SEAT UK and they might offer some financial help towards the Replacement

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. When collecting my car last night I had a good chat with the service manager and his response went along the lines of "these things happen" and he wasn’t very sympathetic to my situation. I’m going to independent mechanic tonight for a second opinion and have another one lined up to have a look at it next week too so we'll see what happens.

It is a 1.9 5 speed box so I will definitely email Seat UK and see what they say.

Lastly, I've decided to look at the option of trading it in. Going out to look at what Leons they have available tonight.

Thanks again

Had to replace my clutch /flyweel at 17k, but mine has been remapped.
If you go onto Eurocar parts you can get prices for supply only, just have to put your reg in mate.
It is disheartening, and the dealers attitude certainly is keeping why most people don't like using main dealers. I wouldn't start looking for chopping your car in yet though, as you will only loose out more.

My clutch and flywheel has been noisy for the past 6k miles....oh the joys of being a mechanic and just letting it carry on haha...

Thought I would update you guys on how this went.

Thanks AndrewJB for prompting me to contact SEAT UK because after a fairly lengthy investigation into the problem and bit of negotiating they agreed to cover the cost completely through the dealership. Have had the car back with the new flywheel and clutch about a week now and the vibrations are gone and it’s running very smoothly.

All in all very pleased with the outcome, as you can imagine!

Mate that is a result! Well done to you, Andy and SEAT UK. My original clutch lasted 95k miles and yours should have lasted a bit longer than that...anyway I should stop talking about clutches, it just winds me up (previous issues). Enjoy ya motor!

I had my clutch and flywheel replaced on warranty for "uneven wear" - I reported that the car was juddering at idle and they said it was that. But now I think it was just the DPF playing up! Still, was all free so not bothered lol! :)

Clutch on my pd130 lasted 135k.

17k is bad driving or more likely faulty part. I would of got that done under warranty.

I've never heard of a clutch just lasting just 17k. Three last longer than that.

You've got quite a bit of power, but not enough to rip a clutch apart in that time frame.
