FR 184 Struggling to start

My 184 had a DTUK tuning box on it... caused me all sorts of problems in my honest 'opinion'... the struggling to start was the first problem, followed by constant regens, fans running on the car for 10 minutes after engine turned off, then came the car going into limp mode very regularly, and also having to have a boost pressure sensor replaced by SEAT who did seem suspicious I had tampered with it but couldn't prove it so was done under warranty... as soon as I took the box off - car ran like a dream... very coincidental that ran perfect when box taken off, but in my honest 'opinion' - the box caused all problems.

Mine is standard and sometimes has starting issues. Also had to have the boost sensor replaced which appears to be a common issue across the vag group on these engines. Maybe these issues weren't related to the tuning box.

Don't be saying things like that as I thought our systems were to blame for all "known" issues with these engines, or so Noel would have us all believe..

And what kind of issues did you have that led to the boost sensor being replaced?

I haven't got a DTUK box but since it's gotten colder I haven't had any issues with mine although mines the 150 not the 184. It's only going to get colder though so you never know.

Car went into limp mode a few times when accelerating. Did this for a couple of days but always reset itself when I turned ignition off the on again and would usually drive ok after that. One day it went into limp mode as I joined the motorway and wouldn't reset after that. Unfortunately I had to drive a 80mile round trip like that as I had to attend a meeting for work and couldn't be bothered with the hassle of calling Seat assistance. Dealer had the car for a week and allegedly stripped various hoses etc before they discovered it was the map sensor. I had suggested this to them as I had read on other vw and skoda forums that this was prone to failing on the 184 engine. Of course the dealer said it was the first they had come across.

Just had my first service (10,000 miles) on my 64 plate FR184 and whilst it was in they did a recall on the turbo boost pressure sensor which they replaced. Perhaps give the dealer a ring to see if yours is affected ??

I also had some problems with my 184ps on cold starts.
It only appeared every now and then so i didnt really care to investigate it much.
I did try with the DTUK box fitted and removed but it did not make any difference at all.
The engine had to turn around for as many revolutions with the box fitted as without the box.

So i guess its just something with the engine and the outside temperature.

Thanks for this because I still haven't got round to disconnecting the box. Not much point. The car has started fine the last few times. Maybe it's just the temperature. I don't remember it happening with my 1.6TDI though

Mine does it as well, asked the garage about it when it was in for 20k service and they claim they did a software update but it still does it but not as often.

Mine also does this now and again and actually failed to start twice. No obvious reason. Seat didn't see anything either and software apparently all up to date. Trying a new camshaft sensor myself to see.

long crank time when starting apparently is often caused by problems with the hydraulic cam sensor.you can find it on youtube, under ea288 long crank time.
