Hi all,

Has anyone any experience in changing timing belt kit and water pump on this engine. What like a job is it. Im guessing you need timing tools etc.

Any help would be great

Cheers

Me and a techie at work changed mine earlier this yeah.

It is technically an easy job. Drop the coolant out. And get access to the offside part of the engine. Need a good jack to support the engine. We didn't have timing tools. Make sure you get the crankshaft TDC and pin the camshaft in. You can use anything that long and thin like a long drill bit.

It can them take the belt off and the water pump (2/3 bolts) and then get the belt back on. The camshaft wheel has some bolts you can slacken (see first pic) so it moves slightly so you can get the belt properly fit.

All in all an easy job just time consuming.

How much was the timing belt kit? I'll be using timing tools, makes the job alot easier than having tipex everywhere

Use the locking tools. Also always loosen the three top pulley bolts before fitting the new belt. This will ensure the new belt is tensioned evenly on both sides, that's why the three bolts are there.

I got the kit, pump and coolant for £110. But most will be charged more. Plus there's a surcharge on the water pump which has to be returned within 30 days.

Cool. Rich, after getting the belt on and tensioned. Turnibg the engine over by hand a few time shoud even the tension out. With slackening the 3 bokts can it nit move the timing ever so slightly?

Turning the engine by hand won't even the tension.

Once everything is done, water pump etc and your ready to fit the belt, loosen the three pulley bolts and turn the pulley slightly to the right, so the bolt heads are just off centre in the elongated holes, dont worry if you go a little too far, then slightly tighten the bolts, just enough to stop the pulley turning (this saves you holding the pulley when feeding the belt around it)

Fit the belt around the bottom pulley and keeping some tension on the belt, do the right side first, feeding it around water pump etc.

Just a tip, if you have a small idler pulley at the bottom left, refit that last before you tension the belt, it will give you a little extra slack to get the belt on.

Once you have fed the belt around and refitted small idler pulley, loosen off the top pulley bolts again and then tension the belt. You need to get the top pulley bolts as near to centre in the elongated holes as possible, dont worry if it's not bang on.

Once your happy, tighten the top pulley bolts and remove the locking tools.

Rotate the engine fully twice by hand. After the second rotation, line you marks back up and reinstall the locking tools. If the tools fit back in place easily and without having to use force, and your tensioner arrow is still lined up with the slot, doesn't have to bang in the middle, then your good to go.

Hope this helps
