FR Rear Caliper Renewal

I'm having problems with the rear calipers on my Ibiza Fr sticking and not re-leasing the handbrake properly, they do have the springs on them to help this. I have decided to re-condition a pair of seat Leon Cupra one's I have in the garage they are off a 2001 model and have the larger pistons than the ibiza ones, they do fit but I want to know if it may cause any problems with rear braking due to the bigger pistons.

Why not just recon ur current Ibiza one? I believe there the Lucas 38 mm piston r they not?? If so get a kit off eBay or seat/VW/skoda.

cars hardly use the rear brakes, even on rear wheel drive. i would just recon your current ones and grease the pistons as they come with minimal grease from factory tbh (i had one rear caliper stick slightly and wore the pads out quicker than the other side)

I was thinking I could recon the leon ones and then I could just swap them over quickly, I am considering just doing the original ones but just thought the leon ones could be an option

I must disagree with you WRT cars hardly using their rear brakes as a generalisation, but that comment is spot on WRT to cars like Fabia, Polo and Ibiza - but that is down to VAG using a brake set up that is way oversized for that weight and performance of car. Take a look at VXs and BMWs - they tend to fit "huge" rear brakes and use them - gives you a "nice level" braking feeling, I can't explain why VAG achieve what is needed when fitting smaller rear brakes,but they do.

Grease in pistons - hydraulic braking systems don't use grease - well maybe a touch of rubber grease under the dirt/dust cover in some systems or inside the slider rubber bushes. There will be grease at the rear (machanical handbrake actuator) end but that is well clear of the hydraulic section.

So, if taking these pistons out, don't be lead into thinking that they will work a lot better with a good lathering of grease - that will just annoy the seals and they will jam a lot more.
