20 mile commute should see the DPF cleaned out regularly

make sure you horse it regularly as well

and worse case you get it removed if it goes ( the internals that it :D )

Just to add - clearing a DPF ( regen ) requires reasonably steady driving at around 2200 rpm for 15 mins or so.
Horsing it, hoofing it and generally driving it like you stole it won't regen very effectively.

And just to settle your worries - since my office moved 18 months ago I only do 3 miles to work and 3 miles back each day.
At weekends I do longer trips - say 40 miles or so
BUT - the 2.0TDi regens far less than the smaller engines.

and as JBB points out - the dpf can always be removed

I always thought it was horsing it that cleared it out. Need to try that method now at 2200 rpm Deano

Unfortunately not.

The Italian tune up, hoofing it, horsing it or driving it like you stole it were all good for the none dpf cars ( especially the 1.9TDi motors.)

The software in the ECU deliberately alters the mixture during a constant speed drive to heat up the exhaust gas and burn the soot out of the dpf - ( Passive regeneration )

Your handbook even tells you what style of driving is needed if the light comes on.

It always clears the fastest for me with gentle acceleration, changing later and getting up to 60 and sitting in 4th gear. Your doing about 2500rpm but it clear in like 10mins usually. I don't have any dual carriage ways or motorways anywhere near me so I find my car regens at least twice a week.
