Are you questioning my sanity? ;-)

If I was going to change gear at just over idle speed, I would have bought a soot-maker.

The thing is, I drove the Impreza the same way (it's only getting going at 3000rpm), and it was a Prodrive modified one (approx 260bhp) and I still got 24mpg. I'm just surprised the FR is only giving 22mpg with the same driving style. I thought FSI technology was supposed to give great economy. Also a Civic Type R gave me around 25mpg which I regularly revved to 8500rpm.

...I really can't believe anyone buys a performance car and changes gear at 3000rpm unless it's a diesel?? I think modern performance engines need to be revved to keep them running well. I had a Z3 for 8 years and 80,000 miles which I redlined almost always and never had a single fault or niggle.

It's supposed to give reasonable economy so VW can fiddle it's way around legislation. FSI technology only works at low RPMs and at low throttle openings which is probably not something you're very familar with

I'm getting 28.3 over the life of my FR TFSI so far (1200 miles), which is a little bit of a shock coming from a 1L Toyota Yaris which came out about 38ish. On the plus side however, I collected my fuel card from my new job today, so I just need to pay the tax on my personal fuel :D

I think we're questioning your sanity unless you believed that the advertised economy could be achieved by driving the car that hard. If you did, then keep taking the pills.

Give the engine a chance to bed in and with a bit of luck you may get 25 mpg one day.
