That black smoke was simply due to them loading the car at 1500rpm. You have to see how it clears up on boost - This is how it is when I drive it - I never load it up so low down on the revs. I have a rule I'll only use WOT in 4th/5th/6th from 2500rpm and above.
The car WILL be 100% clean eventually, but there's not much you can do when a dyno is loaded up at 1500rpm - you have to use WOT from 1500rpm to get the true picture. This is why the power only really comes in after 2000rpm - there's no boost any lower.
and my humble but smokey remaped Golf TDI150 on the rollers...

Heh yes, think you need a better way to record video though ... the sound is not too clear![]()
That BMW smoked right through the rev range, which mine doesn't. Just shows the difference a good map can make, even if mine is somewhat dodgy low down. I'm never going there on the road, so it doesn't bother me. I wouldn't mind a bit more at the top end though - would mean the turbo could be given some more work to do.
For instance that bimmer at circa 270bhp smokes just a little bit....but at "full-power" stage - like the one that was filmed and recorded 290bhp on the rollers smokes like a freight-train... But it certainly did go fast on the road (very even with a E36 M3)! The hardware (turbo, etc) was ALL stock.
Yeah well maybe they should have tuned the car properly and fitted a bigger turbo etc if they want the car to run that sort of power. Maybe then it wouldn`t be so embarrassing to watch.
but there are some people out there that seem to actually enjoy "smoking" other cars...![]()
