Hi,

I've searched and searched, but can't really find an answer to this one....

I have a 2008 1.9Tdi which has been faultless for the 12 months since I've had it.
In the last couple of weeks, I've gradually noticed (what sounds like) a knackered wheel bearing (offside front) which gets worse with speed and slightly worse on left hand bends (nothing at low speeds, or at full lock which eliminates the CV joint). At 30mph and 60mph, it's quite bad.

Yesterday, I had the 2 front tyres replaced (just to eliminate them) and it made no difference. I then took it for MOT, fully expecting it to fail on the wheel bearing, but it passed with no advisory notice!
Obviously, I didn't want to mention it to them :)

Could they have missed it, isn't it bad enough to show, or is it a more sinister fault?

Please help

Tony

front wheel bearings make a drone type noise which will alter pitch when deviating direction

Thanks for the reply.

I suspect it being the wheel bearing.

Going back to when I was a mechanic, if a wheel bearing was shot, it was clearly obvious by jacking it up, spinning the wheel and holding the strut. The strange thing is, there's no vibration using this method and it passed the MOT yesterday.

I've ordered a couple of bearings, so I'll report back...

If its only noisy at 30mph and above, chances are that it wouldnt show up on a MOT, i guess you can spin a wheel by hand at no more than 3-4mph, so unless theres some play or roughness in the bearing, you wouldnt even get an advisory on it.

Thanks for that, I think my question has been answered :)

I've ordered a complete set of disks and pads too..... one of them is warped and I swear the rest are borderline on wear.

....and I thought they'd tightened up on MOT's :D

Just a quick update.....

I bought a pair of bearings and also a complete set of disks and pads (while it was all apart and that) from Euro car parts and it was all promptly delivered the next day.

First off, I read that the hub nut was a 30mm hex bolt and it's actually (no idea what it's really called) a 25mm 12 tooth male torx bolt..... First trip to Helfords.

Next, I realised that I haven't got any Torx bits to take the old disks off....Second trip to Helfords.

Next, I realised that I've only got allen keys in the size of 6mm, 8mm, 9mm and 10mm and the calipers are 7mm.....Third trip to Helfords.

Then (and this really was the icing on the cake) I discovered that I'd been sent a 4 stud hub, instead of 3 stud.

Tomorrow, I've got to drive the 30 mile trip to my Mum's house (I was using her garage to do the work) and then another 20 miles to get the kit replaced for the correct one.

I thought that putting my reg no. into a website would ensure I get the right :censored: parts?

It could only happen to me!

Luckily, I hadn't removed the old bearing or I'd have been in real doo-doo.

Ah well, at least the brakes work ok now, so I don't accidentally drive into the shop window when I get there :D
