Pretty simple to do, I changed mine to a sparco one last year on my mk5. The gaiter is glued on the the knob meaning you'll have to either glue it to the new knob or just cable tie it like I did. Good luck

Thanks for the quick reply. So basically just pull the gaitor down rather than go to the trouble of popping out the whole surround?

Pretty sure I found a video after a google search but you pull the gaiter out of the centre panel.
Pull the gaiter over the knob leaving it attached then there is a green clip holding the knob on. Undoing this is a bit fiddly (I accidentally snapped mine)
Don't quote me and try find some more info before going ahead for peace of mind mate

Once you have pulled the gaitor and its frame over the top of the original gear knob, try to open out that crimped part of the retaining clip, you can see the retaining clip over the green fitting in one of the pictures posted.
By doing that, I used two smallish screwdrivers against each other - if that makes any sense, to easy open - a bit - that retaining clip, then once you have opened it up enough, pull the original gear knob off.
If you are fitting a SEAT etc different gear knob, you will need to crimp the retainer on the new knob - or if a genuine part, it might also come with a new gaitor fitted.
I did this, to my wife's previous Polo as I wanted to fit a genuine leather gaitor to it instead of the crappy leatherette, the bad news was, VW had already fitted a genuine leather gaitor to that car, it was just very hard and plastic! Separating the old gaitor from the gear knob was a right pain in the bum as it was retained by a plastic ring over a plastic mount, lots of bad words, but I got it done okay!

Edit:- the last thing I'd want to end up having showing in any of my cars is a crappy sharp cut off end of a tie wrap, try to keep that hidden - ie inside like VW group intended!

I'm planning a new gaiter so didn't bother with tucking the cable tie/ re-glueing just yet but is probably best that you keep the cable ties out of sight

Actually fitting a gaitor retainer or cable tie over the pulled up gaitor then rolling it back down to hide the retainer/tie wrap used to be an Audi etc fashion statement - I think.

Edit:- to the OP, make sure that you look carefully at some of these pictures so that you can work out where to insert trim removal tools so that you get that gaitor and its fitting frame out without damaging it.
