Gear Knob Wrap

My gear knob has started to become tatty and doesnt look pleasing now so was thinking of the carbon wrap solution as a new knob costs above £60.

First off, how can i remove the gear knob?

What is the best way to fix the tatty gear knob? ie spray, wrap etc.

If wrap, approx how much would i need?

Try simply unscrewing the gear knob from the stick. That's how lots of gear knobs are removed. Possibly easiest to replace with a nice (?) one from Hellfrauds.

You can't just unscrew the gear knob, you have to remove the gaiter ring along with the leather to expose a metal clip that holds the knob fixed to the gear stick.

It's a bit tricky because you can't reuse that metal clip (clamp) you have to get a new one.
I tosset the original one away and put in a new clamp with a screw, for future alterations.

so
1. get that chrome gaiter ring off
2. get the gaiter with leather of
3. unclip that ring to loosen the knob
4. pull the knob out

I saw instructions somewhere online, i think it was for golf MK5, but it's allthe same.

Yeah the previous post is 100% correct. The only problem is the clips on the gear gaitor. Make sure you dont break them And your onto a winner

So would it be just better to wrap the gearknob as it is and not to take it off? Coz cba to get another clamp lol. Also is there a way to keep the gear numbers?

I think every day wear and tear, constantly playing with the knob while changing gear, the vinyl would look even more tatty quite quickly!

Bite the bullet and buy a new Ripspeed gear knob from Halfrauds! LMAO. :gay:

Wrapping the knob would be an absolute nightmare, I had enough trouble wrapping a bike petrol tank due to the ball-like nature of the curves but something as small as a gear knob would be impossible.

I would not wrap the whole thing round because it is leather on the sides and front bt the top and back would only be wrapped so wouldnt see it that much of a problem i presume

Ah ok, that won't be so hard. The only thing you'd have to ensure is that the edges are really stuck down, otherwise it'll just start peeling off straightaway.

Seat do a really nice gear knob top but they are quite expensive. If you wanna do it on the cheap I think the wrap will look ok. Good luck.

Which colour do you guys think would look best? Im looking at buying the 3M di noc stuff and would only need a 10cm x 10cm piece so for a £1 on ebay aint bad to try it with. Theres the white, silver or black colour to choose from but would like an opinion on which one would be best?

Also regarding the mirrors would I just do the caps or the whole thing? Just the caps would only need 2 A4 sheets which is cheap for £9.

PS: Would a 2008 Cupra Gearknob fit the 2006 Stylance Model and would i need any extras?

Are you sure the mirrors only need an a4 sheet? You'd be surprised how much surface area is actually on those mirrors. Although I'm not sure what you mean by 'caps' as I'm just remembering a colleague's Leon rather than me owning one.

As for the knob, I guess it depends on the colour of the leather? But I quite like the look of the silver/grey one that's available.

The mirror caps i meant were the painted things that you can remove straight off the mirror.

Also the gear knob has black leather and was thinking the black carbon wrap would not stand out.

Ah, both make more sense now. Yes, while I do like the grey I think you're on the money to go for the black. One tip, have a play with the orientation of the fibre. You might find it looks better as a diagonal weave rather than a horizontal/vertical? IE turn the vinyl 45 degrees and see if it looks better.

Yh diagonal weave definately looks better as I have it on my iphone in a diagonal weave and it looks kinda cool lol..

Regarding the mirrors would it be better to do the whole thing or just the caps? ( This would require more wrap then)

So i finally got round to wrapping my gearknob in black carbon fibre vinyl. Let me know what you guys think.. lol btw its my first wrap on my car

I know there is a few creases that can be seen and felt but for a £1 its not bad in my opinion lol

It looks good, but to be fair I'm not a big fan of the shape in the first place. But it defiantly is an improvement and for a £1 I don't think you can fault it
