Do you mean the mounting on top of the gearbox?

If so then I'd think that you need to raise the front of the car up onto stands, remove the LHS front wheel and remove some of the wheel arch liner fixing screws so that you can access that area.

Then remove the cover from under the car and support the gearbox using a trolley jack and blocks of wood, then remove the battery and its tray unless your battery is in the boot, and remove all the securing bolts.

It seems that you should fit new bolts when you do this job, that mounting has been removed from my wife's August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS, then lubricated(how/why would VW Group suggest applying copper grease to a shaped/profiled rubber mounting?!), the when I still complained about clunking noises, they replaced it with a stiffer version, your 1.8 will have a different mounting type though.

Yes slightly different as expected but the procedure is still the same, ie replace all bolts that you need to take out and for you it probably means the console bolts as well as you might need to remove the mounting/console combo as one part then swop over the new mounting.

Edit:- have you ever considered creating an Erwin account so that you can view and/or down load information on repairs?

Erwin is an subscription online service that gives access to all the workshop procedures etc that the VW Group dealerships get by default. It is aimed at non VW Group franchised garages and anyone else interested or needing to know how to work on VW Group cars.

You just search for it online and register, then buy time on it to find out what you want to.
