The Gates of Hell (Croydon)
Driving home from work this evening down a rather narrow lane, doing about 25-30mph as there are so many potholes and blind bends.

Some :censored: in a 3 Series comes steaming along in the opposite direction, fails to get over far enough and smashes my driver's door mirror to pieces. The ****** didn't even slow down. [:@]

So now I have a very attractive piece of broken glass dangling from my drivers door, and a door mirror with all its innards on display.

Thankfully it seems not to have done any damage to the door, and although it took one hell of a whack, what's left of the mirror seems to still work. It folds, and if i hold the glass gently to it I can still move it up and down electrically (although I'm not sure whether left and right works though).

The entire plastic casing is gone, but the metal guts of it all seems to be there.

If I can get away with just needing new glass and a new casing, what do you guys reckon I should be looking at price-wise (including painting)? The mirrors are (were) the heated electric folding type, and it's a pre-facelift Cupra so they are the squarer Golf ones.

Alternatively if the motor(s) in the mirror needs replacing too, how much is that likely to push the cost up by?

Also how do I remove the glass? It seems to be wired in - presumably for the heating element, but the wires don't appear to be spaded. I don't really fancy just leaving the glass dangling there scratching my door!

I think (and hope) that I got off fairly lightly. I should be thankful that the Beemer didn't actually front-end me, seeing as he was that close, and going one hell of a pace. I'm still royally pi$$ed off though

My car is my baby - I love her to bits... and in 10 years of driving this is the first accident of any kind of description I've ever had. I know it's really minor when compared to what some of you peeps have been through, but I'm still properly upset! This is also by far and away the nicest car I've ever owned, which makes it all the more heartbreaking!

Bugger... sorry dude :(

eBay might come up trumps for new wing mirrors if you're on a budget. Otherwise it's dealer prices I'm afraid. Hope you get it sorted and back to her former glory ASAP though

As i said to andy in wanted Mk4 golf mirror cap 14 quid glass is 28 pound plus painting mine was 60 pound in total the day before donny south

:( Had a similar thing on my tolly v5 a few years back. The fairer sex driving a corsa and overtaking parked cars on her side came too close to me and we had a mirror impact at a closing speed of 40-50 mph. Total loss of cover and dangling (broken) glass just like your's, even to the point that all the electrics continued to work afterwards.

Anyway, the mirror covers are about £18 on ebay and probably about the same from VW specialists. I got a mirror lens from a VW main dealer (closer than SEAT) for about £20 and sprayed the cover myself as I was about to change the car. I had it in-mind that the mirror detatched from the wires very easily, certainly no soldering. The mirror should just clip back to the round head. Overall and easy and realitively cheap, if unwanted repair.

One thing I recommend is not to test the fit of the new cover before painting. On removal the clips are quite easy to damage. Better to fit it once after painting.

I would say 'damn BMW drivers', but then I do drive a 3-series myself (it's 16-years old though so I am a different breed of driver :p )

Hope you get it sorted out.

There is a brand new heated mirror glass just gone on ebay starting at a fiver. Get it on your watch list!

Mate I feel you pain. Some little toe rag has just smashed one of my rear lights. When someone hurts your pride and joy it is truly gutting. I also hope to get a bargain fix via fleabay, hope you find one too.

Take solice in the fact that his wing mirror bill will be higher than yours !!!

Funnily enough that's pretty much the first thing I thought when it happened.

Well actually it was about the third thing I thought, after

1. BANG "what the f***ing hell was that??"

2. "f***ing BMW drivers!" <-- (I actually looked pretty much exactly like this at the time)
