Hey,

Got a nice new paid job so been respraying and replacing bits and bobs on my leon cupra. Only had for a few months and got it cheap as the last owner never took the time to do the small things that preserve/maintain the car. Anyway a big thing that has always stuck out for me is the drivers and passenger door handles on the interior. They are carved, scratched and worn to hell and are a real eyesore. Anybody rubbed them down before or anything? I'm not bothered about restoring them just want an even finish to them. wet and dry 1200? Is it easy to switch some new ones? I heard they are like £25 pair from dealers and £12 ebay? Let me know if you've done anything to yours that went well!

Yeh loads do it, I did mine in satin black, just scraped the crappy paint off with a small knife then wet and dry with water then undercoat and top coat, came up a treat.

Yes they just pull off, if you look closely you can see the join.

Step 1. Remove the grab-handle cover. This is why you bought the pry tools! While you could just use a screwdriver instead of the pry tools you will most likely chew up the handle plastic while trying to pop the cover off. The pry tools do the job without totally knackering the cover. Start at the lowest point of the handle (upper side) with the pry tool and wiggle it until you have about 1mm of gap. Repeat on the lower side, then back to the upper and keep wiggling until the cover pops free...

Pull the trim from the lowest point...

And finally pull on the opener so you can get the handle cover off...

Mine had that rubber satin finish on them, or at least it had some of it left. It had also been scratched to hell. I took the handles off, scrubbed the remainder off with a plastic dish scourer then gave the plastic a clean with back to black. It looks so much better now.

the scratches are a common issue, some guys have used 3m carbon di-noc stuff and it looks good.

I was tempted to do the same, but my interior is tan leather which doesn't really work with carbon fibre.

i'll get some of those pry tools and try a plastic scourer......if I dont like the finish i'll try wet and dry paper and think about b2b or some kind of paint could be fun. i take it some lacquer is needed over any paint? does the inside half of the handle come off too? is back 2 black permanent i thought i heard you needed to apply more every now and again?

Most lacquers will add a shine/glossy finish so it all depends on the finish you want
