and this one regarding tuning boxes:

This is more or less what Will at PTorque advised me years ago when mapping my 535d.
The laptop bench maps and the chip tuning ones don't touch more than 12 parameters, whereas a custom mapper has access to over 30 and when tuned on a dyno they all need altering to get the best out of the car.
And this is also regardless of the standard power output of your engine.

When you say laptop bench maps are you also including the likes of Racingline / Revo etc as I suspect (due to the power they can pull out of the engine they may be playing with a few more things, also they do turn of certain warnings due to the way the car is mapped.

Yep Will included any place that doesn't have the car in front of you especially on a dyno.
From memory he made adjustments to my 535d every 500rpm.

Ok whilst I would agree backstreet boys have simple maps and you could get more power from a personalised map I still think the big boys deliver with a map that works well and tested on lots of motors across the globe

From my personal experience of having:

Off the shelf maps (big companies, usually stage 2)

Custom maps (well known companies, usually stage 2)

Tuning boxes (big companies, with a tuning box and throttle module, all with Bluetooth control)

I really couldn't put my hand on my heart and say that one was the stand out best of the three.

Unpopular opinion, I know 🤷‍♂️
