bought and fitted a ko3s along with fmic and now officially stg2 since last friday, car was running like a dream and was pretty rapid as expected then a couple of days after that the turbo noise goes from being a nice loud darf vader noise followed by the dump to chattering like a biatch. the noise definitly is coming from the turbo which had supposedly done 35,000 miles.
anybody else suffered this and could enlighten me into what i could?

you checked your dv? vac line on top of dv? recirc pipes?

What noise can you hear on spoolup?

when i had a hybrid turbo on my old mk4 ibiza fr tdi, when you boot it from under 2k rpm the turbo would chatter like a good un untill it was fully spooled up. sounded wicked and that was boosting at 33-36 psi

yeah but this far from a hybrid mate! and it has only just started to do it which tells me something is fooked. well they will be coming off just wanted to see if anyone had experienced the same and could of diagnosed it without paying the bloke another £100+ for labour fitting it then another 100+ for taking it all off again to see whether the turbo is knackered, is there normally visible signs of a knackered turbo or is it the internals which go e.g bearings? is it costly to have a turbo reconditioned?

Only way really to tell if the turbo is damaged is to strip it down fully and inspect all the bearings etc...check for cracks in the housing an damage on the vains. I rang a guy i now who fixes them and thats what he told me.

You would usually expect to see smoke from burning oil. If the shaft has experienced play then oil will seep through the seals and into turbo. Have a look in your boost pipes too it will usually collect in there. Also try and log your boost...a faulty turbo will no doubt be running a lot less boost from inefficiency.

would be a good idea to tighten the 3 bolts holding the turbo to the manifold!but thats just obvious!chattering could well be the gasket if its not tight this will also burn the gasket out! doubt its the turbo prob a pipe left off or fell off!

one of the threads is knackered and it apparently needs helicoiling? as the bolt was not nipping which is why it is blowing, i have checked for pipes etc but couldn't see any that were off. and it is still hitting 21psi but does drop pretty quick.

it will be your gasket making the noise on spoolup and gets louder as psi increases,** had 3 go on me lately but thats due to a warped flange ....

when you change your gasket make sure you havent warped yours, make sure the flange on the turbo connecting to the flange on the manifold is flush, no biggy if its not, take it off and get it machined (like i am)

Dont know what the chatter sound is though, id still say check your DV or hoses, also as craig says, check all your bolts etc and when you change your gasket get new bolts

worst case sinario if your turbo is goosed i have one you can take off my hands if you want

hope this helps

Isn't chatter caused the the turbo stalling? So bearings could be seized? Or am i totally wrong? I'm no turbo genius!

Also (this is fiddly) but take the tip off and you can play with the shaft with out taking the turbo off.
If i was you I'd get a new/second hand ko3s as a rebuild would cost more than a second hand one, also if the thread is striped you MUST get that sorted out or you'll never have it running properly, a thread insert would take 10mins to do and cost £1/£2 if you take it to a engineering work shop and ask them to have a look, if you decide to keep it but as every one says it does sound like a pipe/hose.
