Hey guys, my head gasket is on its way out and ive been around town getting quotes to get it fixed.

ive been quoted from just over £100 from one place and over £500 at another :confused: the best one ive found so far is for between £200-250, this includes;

Scimming the block
New timing belt fitted
Manifold Seal (apparently they can rip apart when you take it of?)
All the oil and coolent
and all the labour that comes with it

does this sound like a good deal to you, and how much have you had yours done for in the past? i was speaking to my old man and he said if i was getting the timing belt done for that money too then its good but i thought id see what the pro's on here say  the cars done 66,000 miles so i think its about time the timing belt got changed too

Cheers guys :)

skimming the head so that it has a good clean flat surface and probvaly a good £30-50

Timing Belt kit roughly £50

Manifold seal come with a head gasket set assy if purchased full and be about £60

Oil+Filter £15-20

so a roughly a good £160-180 possible in parts alone retail wise (get cheaper shopping about) so just a case of paying labour, bear in mind though the 1.4 is common for warping the head so i wouldn't drive it too hard or hot

might even save half the parts with just a couple of gaskets but £250-300 from somewhere reputable and able to moan if it plays up :) doesn't sound too bad at all especially considering the belt's due anyway

thanks Fl@pper! my car had been losing coolent and burning oil a while now, since about christmas time, but i only do around town miles and its never overheated yet, the temp stays about a quarter normally and goes to just over half way when the water needs topping up so, hopefully its not too warped :)

he said he would have the car for about 3 days because its another place that skims it, is this about right to get the whole job done?

yep its hard to find a good place thats not busy ,, sounds silly but if they havent got a lot on theres a reason ,, ,,

prices are pretty good ,ive just done my sons ibiz mk2 ,all the parts were from vw,,and they were cheaper than anywhere else which shocked ,me,, cambelt inc tensioner ,exhaust manifold gasket ,and head gasket all for 65 pounds ,, bargin for vw parts

,my sons is the 8v ,,

16v is alittle more work as more to remove at machine shop and alittle more work removing head from car ,

i took the head to a well trusted machine shop near me called sutton rebore who inspected the head the same day and said all is well ,

cost free, ! as i take alot of work there

,,if it needed working on then yes 3 days good estimate

ps im not punting for any work , i just did my sons as i know how too ,

i would however gladly give you any help i can . euro parts or euro parts are good on prices for oil and antifreeze etc , , and other car parts worth a try but tbh if vw parts are much better quality ,and if there not dear its worth it !

as said mine actuallly worked out cheaper than anywhere else i could get them ,, on those parts ,,

but when i asked about exhaust from vw ,, well after concusion from falling over and hitting my head on the side from price scare " i rang euro parts and got a new one for 110 pounds less ,

morning to rip it apart (if that), drop it up the machine shop for a skim maybe afternoon or day after - leaving an afternoon/next day to build back up

2 days if all perfect or a rush job (rarely is) 3 days tops (relying on others always adds time) so sounds good to me

ps if your head has any damage they cant fix let me know i have a spare one here !!

keep a note of that there if i was you ;)

sorry forgot to say ,, should only take a day to have head back on and of

, but like fl@pper said your relying on machine shop ,

the one i took my cylinder head too is very highly skilled at what he does ,it can take up to 3 days to get it done as there always busy , just from there work load not actuall machineing time , they build alot of race engines etc , hth

just lookin at the parts now to see if i can get the job done any cheaper, getting them off eurocarparts

anyway will i need to get new bolts? ive been told you cant reuse the same ones twice as they stretch from the tension and will snap if used again?

never snapped one yet but considering what they cost compared to the risk of em failing i have always replaced em but i get em cheap so it's easy for me to say

the 1.4's are known for blowing hg's so i would if you can to be honest

without question i always replace bolts in flywheels/driveshafts/heads/pulleys
