Noticed yesterday that my heater/blower only puts out air at level 4 (full tilt) but at the rest of the settings 1,2,3 there is no air coming out at all.

Any ideas what the problem is? Nackered switch maybe? Our a fuse, i would presume though that if it was a fuse i wouldnt get any air at four either?

Any help at all would be great. Thanks

My bet is the resistor as it is only used to limit current to the motor on the first 3 settings. Not sure where it is in the mk4 but it's normally a little green thing.

Are you sure that the fan does not spin on the lower settings?

Maybe the polon filter is blocked and only no4 has the welly to blow through it.

its a common problem with the ford focus too(only know because I work on them all day lol) the switch has more than likely gone because 1,2 + 3 lowers the power to the fan like a transformer and speed no.4 is 12V and theres no need for a power transformer at 12 as its maximum power.

any ideas how i fix it? Id say the centre bit of the dash may need to come out to get at it.

Will i need to get a new switch or will that one be fixable? Its not that big a deal, just a bit of a pain to either have no air or full power!

Thanks for the respones by the way lads. :D

The switch will be fine, it's normally the resistor. Same thing happened on my mk3 Golf. It's plugged into the heater housing, next to the motor. If you can figure out how to get to that then you can replace it. I think it's behind the glovebox so if you can remove that you may be able to get to it.
