Hi all, this morning whilst driving to work I noticed my abs coming in at really low speeds and stopping me from braking properly making me have to use the handbrake. It's got worse throughout the day making it impossible to brake when approaching a mini roundabout. Luckily nothing was coming. It's just like the abs is coming on really violently every time I brake. Any ideas people? Cheers. Ross

Ha yeah it wasn't the best. You tried to brake properly with the handbrake? Very ineffective! Where is the fuse located? And if it is the fuse would the abs just not work at all?

If the fuse has gone it would stop it working rather than make it work too much....

Also i think that abs might be on a mega-fuse under the bonnet anyway.

Best to check it with vag-com, see if there's any faults. Check wheel speed sensors are reading correctly as an intermittant fault may cause it to become a bit over-active...

Hmmm haven't got VAG-Com. Might try disconnecting the battery and re-connecting, see if that makes a diff. Cheers for the comments any way.

For future reference though, where is the fuse box with all the main fuses?

Sounds like a wheel sensor fault to me. There are two fuse boxes, one on top of the battery in the engine bay, and the other at the very end of the dashboard (open door and its behind the end pannel, you can see a slot where you can put a flat head screw driver to prise it off)

Ah right, ok how do I check if it's the speed sensor? I've not got any light on the dash which usually happens when there's a malfunction.

Many Thanks,
Ross

Oh and just to add, it's worse now, it's that violent that I have literally no braking effect at all when I press the brake no matter how hard.

to check the sensor, im guesing a vagcom would be your best bet, even though no light has come up, they can still pick up faults :)

im guessing the car wasnt fitted with it, i was told when i bought it that it had ABS yet i was still not convinced, so one night when it was wet, as i approached a roundabout i thought, ill wack my foot on the break and see if the wheels lock up or not, and sure enough i was right, it did not have abs and the wheels locked up :(
