For the last seven day's, my car's developed a knocking noise, coming from the front driver's side, at first I thought it was the break discs / pads but they seem fine, I took it to a garage just now and at first they could not see anything wrong underneath, nothing was knocking or making a noise when moved around.

Put the car back on the ground and I noticed that one top mount sat higher then the other:

The garage guy thinks it's the top mount but is not sure

What else could it be? the noise is getting louder then before.

unlikely top mount mine has a knock and it is the front strut insert ...........pull on your wheel at the top and listen for the noise or push down on the wing to see if it makes the noise:)

I had this for 2 years. I had my garage look at it every time it was in and he couldn't find anything wrong. By the time I sold my car it had 110k on an 02 plate.

He did say that due to the age of the car I could start replacing suspension parts, bushes, shocks etc and it may fix the noise but he said there wasn't anything physically wrong with the components.

So in the end I just put up with it and turned the stereo up!

As long as the handling isn't afftected there's probably nothing wrong. When one of my bushes needed replacing the car started torque steering all over the place.

I don't think I can live with it tbh, I'd rather have it sorted, doesn't sound right, anyway I notice the knocks increase when turning left?

I had this exact problem last week so decided to change top mounts and put a set of coilovers on while I was at it.
When I removed old strut one of the springs had completely snapped a coil that was what was knocking

Yeah, l agree with Gezz! l've had this problem for the past couple of years l've had mine. lts been checked over countless times when its had other work done, and everytime l collect it, their response is always the same...."everythings fine!?" Mine only really occures when l go over heavy bumps and stuff, but still quite annoying! Short of replacing EVERYTHING though, l don't know how l can sort it and simply replacing everything seems plain silly if there's nothing wrong with it!?

It could well be a small section of coil spring has broke off at either end. I had a knocking noise and it turned out no more than half an inch if spring had broke at the top. Replaced it and it was fine but I did fit poly bushes into my anti roll bar at the same time so it may have been that but there was no real excessive movement in them prior to replacement.

HOLY CRAP! I thought I'd take a look for myself today, jacked the car up on ramps, took the front drivers side wheel off, pushed/forced about the common links/bushes nothing, moved the brake disc around nothing, checked the brake pads for movement nothing, checked the calliper for unusual noises nothing, checked pretty much everything I possibly could nothing, put the wheel back on, took it for a test drive and NO NOISE!?!!!!!

Does this mean the wheel nuts were loose? OMG! no wonder they were so EASY to remove! I actually read somewhere on this forum that this happened to someone else and it was the wheel nuts, shocking. Is this a common thing? My LC is not a bad example, full SEAT dealer history, with 2 mature previous owners.... anyway let's see if it re-occurs after a spirited drive tomorrow.
