Help with Dead Leon Req - MAF? ECU?

Hello all,

I have a 2001 Leon 1.9TDI 110 with 102k miles that is a little bit ill.

Drove to work fine, parked - came out for lunch - traction control light stayed on the car would not start, turns over but nothing else. I called the RAC who fitted a lead running from the battery to the stop solenoid - this clears the warning light and the engine starts.

However, when the lead is connected the car starts but it runs with no power - it can still do motorway speeds etc but it takes forever to get there! The accelerator seems to work as normal for the first 10% pushing the pedal past 10% either has no effect or can make the car slower.

I have taken the car to Seat who just said it the ECU and quoted £1100 fitted! I got the impression they're assuming it is rather than know it is. I have connected VAG-COM and got the results below.

Does it really look like the ECU? Anyone know where I can get a cheap one? Or could it be something else like the MAF?

Thanks! Tom

Seems like the ecu is not communicating with the rest of the car. Have you had phyical look at the ecu?

Hi, sorry to be dull - where is the ECU

I have just tried disconnecting the battery for 30mins but it still have the warning light and won't start unless the lead is shorting the battery-stop solenoid

favourites are needle lift (on injector three) crank sensor or any number of dirty earths, the car is running in limp mode, if you are unsure where the ECU is maybe you need a none SEAT dealer, a good independant VAG man

I thought this rang a bell, and I've remembered why.

From Honest John's site, car-cy-car breakdown for the Leon:

Leon TDI 110s could also suffer same ECU problem as Golf Mk IV TDI 110. VAG acknowledges a fault with the ECU (038 906 018 BM) and specifies an upgraded unit (038 906 018 GQ) at £695.00 + VAT. According to VAG technical, this problem will eventually occur with all ECUs of this part number, so a second hand part may only be only a short term cure.
:(
Would be worth trying to find the part number on your ECU, but not sure where they are on Leons....

Hi, thanks for the replies.

The SEAT Estimate has this part code on S038906012AT, although I don't know if the current part is the same or not.

I will try an independant VAG specialist and see if they can sort anything out. Thanks, Tom.
