The AC does smell, but does turn things cold
If the temperature at the centre vents is below 8c then you are okay, but above that, then you are getting low on gas.

£199 for a service and timing belt!?! are you sure?
Thats a major service (1.9 hours of labour and the cost of 4.3lts of oil - 5x40s pd oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter [plugs if its a petrol] and sundries)
timing belt change (2.5 hours of labour and the cost of a belt kit)
SO 4.4 hours of labour and over £100 worth of parts? are they only charging £20 per hour labour?
I'd make 100% sure they did the belt change.
As for Dealers carrying out your services; makes no real difference to re-sale value (maybe a slight increase in value if its been done by a dealer) BUT if you have a warrenty issue in your 4th year and all your services have been done by seat then seat uk in most cases wil cover 100% of the costs.
Services according to seat are as follows:
10K,30K,50K,70K are all oil change and inspection services where the oil is changed and a check over is carried out.
20k,60k,100k are intrim services where the oil is changed, the pollen filter and an inspection is carried out.
40k,80k,120k are all major services where the oil is changed, air pollen fuel filters and spark plugs are changed and an inspection is carried out.
timing belt change intervals are now mostly 4years or 40k miles.
Brake fluid is mostly changed in 2 year intervals but on new vehicles there is an initial 3 year period where it doesnt need changing, it is only after this that it becomes every 2 years.
Air conditioning should be serviced every 2 years, this should include:
Pollen filter change
Anti-bacterial decontamination treatment
Full re-gas with new oil.
Hope thats of some help.
Any more questions - fire away.
AH! about the coolant - have you ever topped it up yourself? used the wrong coolant or accidentally put blue ethene glycol based coolant in? if not then advising you to change life-long coolant (by that i mean unless it all leaks out of the system or is heavily contaminated then it should last the life of the car without a change, just regular top-ups are required) seems a little bit strange. If you personally want it doing then thats your preference.
Both are jobs which can be done with a small amount of mechanical knowledge or can be done by a normal garage at a more reasonable cost i.e £50 for both, just make sure they use the right coolant (g12 - the red stuff).
do you know if kwik fit are cheap?
I know WHY kwik-fit are cheap.
Unfortunatly i dont know kent at all my friend.
yeah they are basicly a tyre and exhaust fitters, why they are trying to branch out in diagnostics, air conditioning etc is beyond me, its like mcdonalds selling serloin steaks.
Skoda dealers can be very competative and will know your car intimatley as they are very similar to the octavia.
I rang Formula 1 auto centers and they quoted me £70 for both, and that will include some sort of check up too, that is a good price right?
seems alright that pal, the health check will just be a ploy to get money out of you by telling you that you have faulty parts, worn tyre etc unfortunatley it is now common practice in motor garages these days.
